In short:
A current court case against a person who made threats against Dr. Fauci and his family has shown that Protonmail is providing user data to US Law enforcement agencies.
Protonmail did not provide E-mail content, but did provide a list of other Mail addresses and Mail Metadata to US Law Enforcement.

Swiss Federal Police Department "fedpol" confirmed that "Protonmail cooperates with Law Enforcement. The cooperation is good/pleasant."
Switzerland is a strong and mature surveillance state. Laws include the Überwachungsgesetz BÜPF (German source) and the Nachrichtendienstgesetz (NDG) (German Source).

In short: If you value your privacy and metadata, which you should, avoid Protonmail like the plague. And definitely don't use it for both activism, and personal use.

Though it is not free, it provides the option to pay by cash, bank transfer and paypal.
This payment is not coupled to your account.
Privacy and security are their highest priority, and that's why they don't allow custom domains for example.
As that would mean that they would have to save personal data regarding ICANN (Domain Registration Information).
They also disallow any kind of personally identifying S/MIME or PGP Keys. Keep that in mind for personal use.
