On this day, in 1970, Chile's Salvador Allende became the world's first-ever democratically elected Marxist president.

Against the west and his own right-wing-controlled congress, in just his first year in office, Allende:

- Nationalized copper, carbon, iron, saltpeter and steel.
- GDP grew by 2.7%. The industrial sector grew 12%, the mining sector 10% and the agricultural sector 5%.
- Lowered unemployment from 8.3% to 4.8%.
- Reforested 60.000 hectares of land.
- Expropriated 90% of Chile’s private banking (16 banks).
- Created a social security system for low-income workers and housewives.
- Expropriated, requisitioned or nationalized more than 70 monopolies and strategic companies.
- Fixed prices of rent and mortgages to end speculation.
- Made hospital tests and medicines free for all.
- Reduced medicines prices drastically by lowering their taxes.
- Set the universal retirement age to 60 years old.
- And much more.
