Dear NTU community,

Following the construction of the Jurong Region Line, the Jurong Innovation District will be added to the CleanTech Park site along Jalan Bahar. This site is also adjacent to the East of NTU, along the Jalan Bahar and PIE area.

This will require forest clearance right at our doorstep. We sat down to review JTC's plans and the 597-page Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) conducted by AECOM to understand the impacts on the surrounding environment. View our full thoughts in our Instagram post.

As we've seen from our time in NTU, our campus is extremely biodiverse, with all manner of animals, many rare and endangered, showing up all the time! This is no coincidence - NTU is surrounded by large forest patches that maintain the shade, humidity, and habitat complexity needed by many of these species.

As the commitment to and success of habitat restoration is not guaranteed, retaining existing habitats should be non-negotiable. We want JTC to genuinely commit to the path of least destruction for the sake of NTU's wild neighbours

nothing to do with clothes but aside from ntu students i urge you all to read up on this issue, and if you feel the same as i do regarding the impact on singapore’s environment and wildlife, to access the feedback form and join us in voicing our concerns

i think sustainability is a word that gets thrown around a lot when it comes to our community here on tele as well as thrifting, and i do admire how many of us take care in our consumption. often i get the feeling that my efforts don’t matter all that much, they might help me sleep better at night, but they can’t reverse large scale environmental damage caused by big companies and cooperations. i’m hoping that this feeling strikes a chord with y’all because as frustrating as that is, its all the more meaningful that we have an opportunity to speak now.

we won’t know the outcome of this and there’s no guarantee, but i think its worth a shot to try. in singapore’s past, we’ve had similar matters. in the case of chek jawa, the efforts of nature enthusiasts and conservationists paid off, and the governments decision to reclaim chek jawa was reversed.

in the present, the aforementioned report is commissioned by the JTC and undoubtedly will contain biases softening the impact of what they plan to do. the instagram post provides more details, and again, i urge you to have a look and share this with your friends and family if possible. i’m not a nature expert by any means - but we contribute where we can and thus i hope to spread even just a little bit of awareness if it means possibly reaching people who will care.
up to 56 species and maybe more would be affected, including the critically endangered sunda pangolin. our wildlife will suffer. for all my nature and environment lovers, now’s the time to act.
