"Brave, bold, brilliant." Bulldog Distr. in the UK has revealed the trailer for a film called Europa, which originally premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last year in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar. This film is essentially Son of Saul but for Middle Eastern refugees in Europe today. It has the same intense, non-stop focus on just one Iraqi refugee on the run on the Turkey-Bulgaria border. Europa is based on real events happening on the dangerous 'Balkan Route' where migrants are smuggled into Europe across the Turkish border and are often subject to violence, intimidation and illegal pushback. Iraqi-Italian filmmaker Haider Rashid's goal was to create an immersive experience to allow the audience to be with the character, close to him, sometimes breathing with him, and to create questions in the audience's mind, testing their definition of empathy, as this character of whom they know very little, tries to survive and remain a human. It's screening in the Midnighters section at the festival, as another brutal social media horror thriller for the digital age. "The GameStop frenzy ripped the curtains of how rigged our markets really are." HBO has revealed the trailer for a doc titled Gaming Wall Street, the second doc about the GameStop stock debacle. Paramount also already debuted their own doc GameStop: Rise of the Players on Paramount+, and HBO has dropped in with their rival offering on the same story. "The underdogs had the upper hand, but then what happened?" Gaming Wall Street is narrated by Kieran Culkin, best known recently as Roman on HBO's "Succession". The director explains: "I wanted to create a compelling documentary about a niche online community which grew into the movement behind GameStop and momentarily shifted the balance of power on Wall Street. Yeah, it's true, sh_t does happen. This mesmerizing Czech short film is a superbly creative, quirky, amusing animation creation that is worth your time. Sh_t Happens was made as a graduation project by animation filmmakers Michaela Mihályi & David Stumpf. It premiered in 2019 at the Venice Film Festival, then stopped by a bunch of other fests, including Sundance, L'Étrange, and the Brussels Animation Film Festival. It's set at apartment building full of self centered inhabitants. Utterly exhausted caretaker and his sexually frustrated wife. Widowed deer drowning his sorrows in loads of alcohol. While trying to cope with problems, they find themselves in a hard to solve triangle asking for absurd and irrational solutions. The consequences can easily become permanent, sometimes maybe too permanent. I always enjoy off-beat animation like this, so absurdly creative and alluring. Sony Pictures has revealed the third & final official trailer for Morbius, co-produced by Marvel Studios starring Jared Leto as the "superhero" known as Morbius the Living Vampire. The story follows a brilliant biochemist named Michael Morbius who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. And thus he becomes "the living vampire" - though is he a villain or a hero? The cast includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, Charlie Shotwell, and Tyrese Gibson. "The world as we know it is coming undone..." "Things are not quite what they appear." WB has debuted the second trailer for the next Fantastic Beasts movie, known officially as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. This sequel continues with the Wizarding World series after the last movie (The Crimes of Grindelwald) from 2018. We featured the first trailer late last year. Dumbledore knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is trying to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Newt to lead a team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old & new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. Jude Law stars in this one as a "younger" Albus Dumbledore, and Mads Mikkelsen co-stars as Gellert Grindelwald. As we get closer and closer to the Academy Awards this year (coming up on March 28th), the next important set of winners have been revealed. The 28th annual SAG Awards (Screen Actors Guild Awards) honor the greatest performances from 2021, as chosen by other actors which means this is one of the most definitive lists of the best performances. All of the nominees, too. Actors know their profession better than anyone and are very particular about good performances. So what did they pick from 2021? HBO revealed a teaser trailer for a new dark comedy horror thriller series titled The Baby, created by Lucy Gaymer & Sian Robins-Grace. It is indeed a new series about a woman and a baby, but uh, it's definitely not what you're expecting. At all. When 38-year-old Natasha is unexpectedly landed with a baby, her life of doing what she wants, when she wants, dramatically implodes... "Where does it come from? What does it want? And what lengths will Natasha have to go to in order to get her life back? She doesn't want a baby. The baby wants her." "Tell me - do you enjoy existing?" Damn, what a question. Saban Films has released an official trailer for the film Chariot, an intriguing psychological thriller mixed with a bit of sci-fi. A story about a corporation and a doctor, played by John Malkovich, that oversees the process of reincarnation, and a young man named Harrison who becomes a glitch in the system when he encounters a woman he loved in a previous life. That concept initially makes me think of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind along with that Transcendence movie, though involving reincarnation and not A.I. this time. Another description states the film is a "dark and twisted thriller." Thomas Mann stars with Rosa Salazar, plus Scout Taylor Compton, Vernon Davis, Chris Mullinax, Shane West, and Malkovich. Netflix has revealed the full-length official trailer for The Adam Project, a new sci-fi adventure movie starring Ryan Reynolds. We featured the first teaser a few weeks ago after glowing reviews hit the web. A time-traveling pilot teams up with his younger self and his late father to come to terms with his past while saving the future. It doesn't sound like much, but the reviews are comparing this to Spielberg and Zemeckis. Ryan Reynolds teams up with a younger version of himself, confronting both his past and troubles growing up, while also saving the future. The cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Walker Scobell, with Catherine Keener, and Zoe Saldaña. From director Shawn Levy, who recently made Free Guy with Reynolds. "I promised him I'd never quit." Music Box Films has revealed an official trailer for The Rose Maker, an indie comedy from France that originally premiered in 2020. It's finally opened in the US this April after first debuting in French cinemas last summer. Eve Vernet was the largest rose grower. It is now on the verge of bankruptcy, on the verge of being bought out by a powerful competitor. In addition, Véra, her faithful secretary, employed three ex-convict employees without any gardening skills. They must team up to rescue the business and save her flowers. La Fine Fleur (which translates to The Fine Flower) stars Catherine Frot, Manel Foulgoc, Fatsah Bouyahmed, Olivia Côte, Marie Petiot, Vincent Dedienne, as well as Rukkmini Ghosh. This actually looks quite charming! I love a good underdog story about someone who figures out how to make things work on her own, while discovering the hidden talents of newcomers. "Mountains always listen... and never talk back." Bleecker Street has debuted a trailer for Infinite Storm, the true story of a woman who found a man lost in the snow on a mountain. Based on the beloved article "High Places: Footprints in the Snow Lead to an Emotional Rescue" by Ty Gagne, originally published in Reader's Digest. An experienced hiker attempts to save a stranger during a blizzard on Mount Washington. Naomi Watts stars as Pam Bales, who goes out for a hike on a day where a storm hits but before she comes back she finds a man and takes it upon herself to get them both down the mountain before nightfall arrives and they succumb to the storm. In addition to Watts, the cast includes Billy Howle, Sophie Okonedo, Denis O'Hare, and Parker Sawyers. "Gravity is broken - leap as you like." Netflix has debuted the full-length trailer for a new anime film called Bubble, from "Death Note" and "Attack on Titan" filmmaker Tetsuro Araki. Here's the concept: The story is set in Tokyo, after bubbles that broke the laws of gravity rained down on the world. Cut off from the outside world, Tokyo has become a playground for a group of young people who have lost their families, acting as a battlefield for parkour team battles as they leap from building to building. Hibiki, a young ace known for his dangerous play style, makes a reckless move one day and plummets into the gravity-bending sea. His life is saved by Uta, a girl with mysterious powers. The pair then hear a unique sound audible only to them. Why did Uta appear before Hibiki? Their encounter leads to a revelation that will change the world. The voice cast features Jun Shison, Mamoru Miyano, Yuki Kaji, and Tasuku Hatanaka. This looks super trippy and creative, with so many ambitious ideas in one movie. What is going onnn?! "One day, we'll laugh at all this." Kino Lorber has revealed an official trailer for Hit the Road, an award-winning, outstanding little indie film from Iran. It's the feature debut of filmmaker Panah Panahi, who just so happens to be the son of acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. This premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last year in the Director's Fortnight section and ended up with tons of rave reviews (one of my favorites of the fest). The film follows a chaotic, tender Iranian family that has embarked upon a a road trip across a rugged landscape and fussing over the sick dog and getting on each others' nerves along the way. Only the mysterious older brother is quiet, as he is headed somewhere else. Panah Panahi "makes a striking feature debut with this charming, sharp-witted, and deeply moving comic drama." The film stars Pantea Panahiha, Hasan Majuni, Rayan Sarlak, and Amin Simiar. This is one of the best international films from last year that everyone must see when they get a chance. "What do you do when someone's mean?" IFC Midnight has unveiled an official US trailer for a freaky little Norwegian thriller about kids with powers called The Innocents, made by a writer / director named Eskil Vogt. In addition to directing the film Blind, which made my Top 10 in 2014, Vogt is also a co-writer on the Oscar-nominated The Worst Person in the World with his fellow filmmaker Joachim Trier. But this one is a bit scarier. During the bright Nordic summer, a group of children reveal their dark and mysterious powers when the adults aren't looking. In this original, gripping supernatural thriller, playtime takes a dangerous turn. The films stars Rakel Lenora Fløttum as Ida, Alva Brynsmo Ramstad as Anna, Sam Ashraf as Ben, and Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim as Aisha.
