"Do you think Murat is guilty?" The Match Factory has debuted the promo trailer for the German political comedy Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush, which premiered at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival earlier this month. It won two awards: Best Screenplay and Best Lead Performance for actress / comedian Meltem Kaptan. Desperate to help her son, Rabiye Kurnaz, a housewife and loving mother from Bremen, goes to the police, notifies authorities and almost despairs at their impotence and in the end, against all the odds, something truly remarkable happens. She learns her son has been sent to Guantanamo, and spends years fighting to free him, taking her all the way to the Supreme Court in the US. Kaptan stars as Rabiye Kurnaz, joined by Alexander Scheer, Charly Hübner, Nazmi Kirik, Sevda Polat, Abdullah Emre Öztürk, and Safak Sengül. "This isn't the end of the war... it's the end of everything." Netflix has launched the first official trailer for an action thriller titled Black Crab, made by Swedish filmmaker Adam Berg delivering his first feature film. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, six soldiers on a covert mission must transport a mysterious package across a frozen archipelago. The concept combines post-apocalyptic survival in freezing cold conditions with a war movie thriller involving transporting a package that might or might not save the world end the war. "But for speed skater turned soldier Caroline Edh, the mission is about something else entirely" as she wants to find and rescue her daughter. Noomi Rapace stars as Caroline, with Jakob Oftebro, Erik Enge, Dar Salim, Ardalan Esmaili, Aliette Opheim, and David Dencik. "My planet is dying... Earth is on the same trajectory." Showtime has unveiled a full-length official trailer for their sci-fi series The Man Who Fell To Earth - arriving this spring. A modern update on the iconic 1976 sci-fi film that starred David Bowie, also titled The Man Who Fell To Earth. They're re-adapting the novel that the film was based on, written by Walter Tevis and first published in 1963. "An alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future." The highly anticipated upcoming original sci-fi drama series The Man Who Fell To Earth – starring Oscar & Emmy nominee and BAFTA Award winner Chiwetel Ejiofor – debuts on Showtime this April. Naomie Harris will also star as Justin Falls, a brilliant scientist and engineer who must conquer her own demons in the race to save two worlds. The cast also includes Jimmi Simpson, Rob Delaney, and Sonya Cassidy. It seems a bit different than the first film in that his focus is on saving Earth from climate related mistakes, but it doesn't look like he loses his focuses and becomes an alcoholic as in the Bowie film. "Not every man in a suit and tie is a gentleman. Not every gentleman wears a suit and tie." But some still do... The Outfit is the first feature film directed by an up-and-coming writer and producer named Graham Moore, originally born in Chicago, Illinois. The film recently premiered as a Special Screening at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival and it's a clever, sneaky little mob thriller set in one location. It has this familiar "made during the pandemic" vibe, specifically that it's built around a very small cast and it all takes place in one location meaning they could make it in a small studio with a small crew and easily follow all the COVID-19 rules & regulations. But that doesn't take away from the thrill of the film, as it's a gripping tale of Chicago mobsters and one tailor who might just be smarter than all of them. "I have faith in you, you just need to have faith in yourself." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a charming feel good dog movie titled Rescued by Ruby, about a fluffy shelter dog finding its connection with a frigidity state trooper. How adorable. It's actually based on a true story! Made for Netflix, this seems like the kind of stuff that Disney used to drop straight-to-VHS. Chasing his dream to join an elite K-9 unit, a state trooper named Dan partners with a fellow underdog: clever but naughty shelter pup Ruby. As you can see in the trailer, she seems to be a Border Collie - not the usual German Shepherd or Doberman K9 dogs, but that's all good! She seems awesome enough anyway. This stars Grant Gustin, Scott Wolf, Kaylah Zander, Camille Sullivan, Tom McBeath, and Sharon Taylor. Who doesn't like a dog movie?! "It's a wake up call to us all." HBO has unveiled the official trailer for the documentary Phoenix Rising, directed by Oscar-nominated doc filmmaker Amy Berg. It just premiered last month at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, playing as a 77 minute feature film. This HBO doc special is debuting streaming as a two-part series instead: Part 1, Phoenix Rising: Don't Fall, starting March 15th, then Part 2, Phoenix Rising: Stand Up, on March 16th. Actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood takes her experience as a survivor of domestic violence to pursue justice, heal trauma, and reclaim her story in a culture that instinctively blames women. The film intimately charts her journey as she moves toward naming her infamous abuser for the first time. Phoenix Rising delves behind familiar headlines and explores the often-misunderstood aspects of domestic abuse, helping to shed light on the many factors that prevent survivors from coming forward with their stories as they deal with years of aftershocks and emotional trauma. Here's a whole other "view" of Norway. I despise cruise ships. I cannot stand them, I don't think they should be allowed anywhere, they're harmful to the planet and local communities. But the industry is growing, and some people love them. This fantastic four minute short gives us a look at how bad the cruise ship invasion is in one city in Norway. Stavanger is a beautiful place located on the west coast of Norway, and in recent years has become a destination for many of these giant, ugly ships. "It takes away the sun, it takes away the air. It's claustrophobic." Norwegian poet / filmmaker Odveig Klyve made this film titled View, a dialogue-free short that let's us see what it's like when these ships come to town. And it's not pretty. "We didn't leave him... He is always with us." RLJE Films has revealed an official trailer for a horror film titled The Twin, which takes place in Finland following an American family that moves there after losing one of their children. The film is opening in Finland first in April, then in the US this May. The film is about a mother who needs to confront the unbearable truth about her surviving twin son. She must "unravel the torturous truth about her son and confronts the malicious forces attempting to take a hold of him." Teresa Palmer stars, along with Steven Cree, Barbara Marten, and Tristan Ruggeri playing both of the twin boys. Another epic horror thriller from Finland! Wow - this has some incredible shots in it. Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a docu-series called The Andy Warhol Diaries, made by acclaimed doc filmmaker Andrew Rossi, and executive produced by Ryan Murphy. After he's shot in 1968, Andy Warhol begins documenting his life and feelings. Those diaries, and this docuseries, take a peek behind his persona. This breathtakingly expansive, six-part portrait of a legend chronicles the remarkable life of Andy Warhol from the intimate vantage point offered by the artist’s own posthumously published diaries. The filmmakers say that "The Andy Warhol Diaries deftly validates Warhol’s belief that the idea is not to live forever but to create art that will." It also features many of those who worked, created, and played alongside him from the subversive to the mainstream, from John Waters to Rob Lowe. "Show them the best parts and mislead them to create interest." GKids US has released a teaser trailer for the Japanese anime film known as Pompo the Cinephile, which opened in Japan last summer. It's finally getting a theatrical release in the US starting at the end of April this year. Pompo the Cinephile (originally 映画大好きポンポさん) is a rollicking, exuberant ode to the power of the movies, and the joys and heartbreak of the creative process, as a new director and his team devote their lives to the pursuit of a "masterpiece." Fueled by the excitement from the film's domestic release in Japan, a crowdfunding campaign to create a 35mm print of the feature achieved its fundraising goals of ¥10,000,000 in just eleven days. Featuring the voices of Konomi Kohara, Hiroya Shimizu, and Akio Ôtsuka. It is a bit of a challenge for most anime to find a bigger audience in the US (unless it's Ghibli or Ponoc or Shinkai or Hosoda) but this kind of story about making movies is exactly the kind that can break out here. "This is the moment to save our world." IMAX has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film called The Last Glaciers, an IMAX experience hitting theaters exclusively in March. "Embark on a global IMAX adventure where explorers use extreme sports to investigate climate change." The Last Glaciers doc project began as a personal extreme sports challenge between Craig and Malcom. The filmmaking team climbed a 5800m mountain in Peru twice in two days to attempt to be the first to tandem paraglide off the summit and survive the endeavor. As their awareness of the climate crisis grew, so too did the compulsion to dive deeply into the science and to tell what we think is a story of critical importance for humanity and particularly the next generation. It was shot using 4K ultra-HD cameras in some of the world's most challenging filming locations in 12 different countries. The film also features breathtaking cinematography and original music composed by Grammy-nominated producers Above & Beyond. Whoaaaa! This looks awesome. There's a badass new project in the works from the two talented filmmakers Zeek Earl & Chris Caldwell, best known for turning their short into a feature film called Prospect (which we highly, highly recommend watching - it's on Hulu now). Their latest idea is called The Fringe, and it's essentially a new "sci-fi, cinematic universe" set in space following scavengers or freelancers called Drifters: miners, engineers, bounty hunters, trappers, mercenaries, gastrotechs. They've decided to dip into NFTs to try "new model of film financing that will put full creative control back into the hands of the film's artistic team." The NFT collection will be comprised of in-world characters called Drifters. "The NFT project will be an immersive narrative experience that will introduce fans to the universe in novel ways, creating a portal into the world’s lore via the art and other integrated mediums like an in-world compendium." "There's something wrong with this place..." RLJE Films and Shudder have unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Offseason, which originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last year, later stopping by a few other fests. The film is made by an indie filmmaker named Mickey Keating, his seventh feature film so far. After receiving a mysterious letter about her mother's grave, a woman travels to a desolate island town to find out what's wrong and soon becomes trapped in an inescapable nightmare. Starring Jocelin Donahue as Marie, along with Joe Swanberg, Richard Brake, Melora Walters, and Jeremy Gardner. This trailer gives away a lot of the film, but I guess they're trying anything to get people interested somehow. I caught this during SXSW and I was not the biggest fan. "I wonder how something so horrific... could have come to pass." FX + Hulu have debuted a teaser trailer for a new true crime thriller series titled Under the Banner of Heaven, based on the Jon Krakauer book of the same name. It tells the true story of a double murder committed by two fundamentalist Mormons in the 1980s. A devout detective's faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to an esteemed Utah family's spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government. The series follows the detective who is a FLDS member, starring Andrew Garfield as Pyre. Featuring an impressive ensemble cast with Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, and Rory Culkin. It also features two terrific directors: David Mackenzie (Starred Up, Hell or High Water, Outlaw King) as well as Isabel Sandoval (Lingua Franca), further confirming that almost all the best filmmakers are working on TV series now. "The legacy really speaks for itself." Discovery has revealed the first offiical trailer for a documentary series about athletes titled Legacy: In the Shadow of Greatness. It seems a bit strange that they'd decide to make an entire series about nepotism, but these three kids literally are "living in the shadow of greatness" no matter how you frame it. The six-part series from 11-time Emmy Award winning filmmaker Jonathan Hock follows the athletic pursuits of the children of sports icons Dwyane Wade, Evander Holyfield, and Randall Cunningham as they attempt to make their own mark on the world. It focuses on Zaire Wade, Evan Holyfield, and Vashti Cunningham. This is a rather lackluster trailer so far, not that these people aren't working hard, but it just seems so obvious. This one played at both Fantastic Fest and at the Sitges Film Festival last fall to kick things off. Barbarians finds four friends' excursion to a remote country house taking a bizarre and violent turn when uninvited guests show up. This seems like a British dark comedy twist on Funny Games, with a dash of You're Next thrown in to spice it up. A dinner party in a country house brings four friends together for a birthday celebration. But as the night progresses secrets emerge and unsettling events begin to unfold around them. "Who wins in a fight - the smart guy, or the crazy guy?" Apple TV has debuted a full-length official trailer for the series WeCrashed, about another business flop story. Arriving on Apple streaming this March. The series tells the story of the greed-filled rise and inevitable fall of WeWork, one of the world's most valuable startups, and the narcissists whose chaotic love made it all possible. "Inspired by actual events — and the love story at the center of it all. WeWork grew from a single coworking space into a global brand worth $47 billion in under a decade. Then, in less than a year, its value plummeted. What happened?" Oh we all know what happened, but of course it makes for a good TV show to watch narcissistic, vane people make greedy, foolish mistakes. Too many stories like this. We've been posting a new trailer every year over the last few years (one in 2020, another in 2021) for this 80s nostalgia documentary In Search of Tomorrow, and it's finally ready to debut. journalist / director David A. Weiner's follow-up to his doc about 80s horror In Search of Darkness, this focuses on the treasure trove of science fiction films made in the 80s. "A five-hour-long retrospective of '80s sci-fi movies featuring interviews with actors, directors, writers, SFX experts, and composers."
