"Say someone did hide a message in those tapes - do you really want to be the guy to figure out what that means?" Lightbulb Film in the UK has revealed another full UK trailer for their release of the indie mystery horror-thriller Broadcast Signal Intrusion, made by filmmaker Jacob Gentry. This originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival and opened last fall in the US (it's out now to watch in the US only if you to check it out). The film lands in UK cinemas this March. In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts that took over antenna TV signals, and he becomes obsessed with uncovering the conspiracy behind them, while wondering if any of this might connect to the disappearance of his wife years ago. Harry Shum Jr. stars as James, with an indie cast including Chris Sullivan, Kelley Mack, Steve Pringle, and Justin Welborn. I caught this at SXSW last year and enjoyed it, there's some intriguing style and mystery within. This trailer reveals more than the US one, but not everything. "Rescuing the world takes a pair." Ohh what a tagline. They're back!! Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is an all-new, never-done-before, completely 100% original movie (based on pre-existing IP owned by Disney). A comeback 30 years in the making, the hybrid live-action/CG animated action-comedy catches up with the former Disney Afternoon television stars in modern-day Los Angeles. There's a really fun transition moment in this teaser where they go from the classic 2D TV animation style to the "modern" 3D CGI style, and it kinda works? But don't forget that they tried to do this with Tom & Jerry, and it didn't out that great. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers stars John Mulaney as Chip, Andy Samberg as Dale, and KiKi Layne, plus Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogen, J.K. "You owe a debt to a helluva lot more people than just me." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for Windfall, a new "Hitchcockian thriller" following a wealthy couple who arrive at their vacation home only to find it's being robbed. This is the latest film by filmmaker Charlie McDowell, best known for his Sundance gems The One I Love and The Discovery. The concept for this one, created by co-star Jason Segel, wonders "what if" your safe space at home "gets invaded and doesn't feel safe anymore?" Starring Jason Segel, Lily Collins, Jesse Plemons, and that's it. "The story really exposes all three of us," Collins explains. "We're all flawed, and the story showcases and starts to unearth how those flaws come about and that none of us are innocent. And I feel like it is about choice and the choices we make and the choices we don't make and how that does set you off on a very specific path." Oh this looks VERY good. "There are just some things... you don't understand." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a new mystery crime thriller series titled Pieces of Her, based on Karin Slaughter's bestselling novel of the same name. The best part about this is that stars the superbly talented Toni Collette, in a role where it seems she has some hidden sides. When a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall with her mother suddenly explodes into violence, an adrift young woman's conception of her mother is forever altered. As figures from her past start to resurface, she is forced to go on the run and on that journey, begins to piece together the truth of her mother's previous identity and uncovers secrets of her childhood. Also co-starring Bella Heathcote, with Jessica Barden, Jacob Scipio, Joe Dempsie, Aaron Jeffery, Omari Hardwick, Gil Birmingham, David Wenham, Calum Worthy, Nicholas Burton, and Terry O’Quinn. "Open your third eye... and prepare to die!" Mutiny Pictures already released this indie Troma-esque horror film last fall, but we're just catching up with it now thanks to a tip from Twitter. How did we miss this last year?! I Need You Dead is a homemade, gross-out, wacky horror comedy creation made by the filmmaker Rocko Zevenbergen. After a moment of total teenage angst, a young punk soon finds himself at odds with a psychedelic monster of his own creation. It's described by the filmmaker as "the type of party that starts on top of the world, but by the end has your head halfway down a toilet." There is a new hallucinogen going around, but it brings out more than just some good vibes. The film stars Estevan Muñoz, Sidra Morgan-Montoya, Lloyd Kaufman, Tim Coyle, and Michael Morrison. "It's not your mother up there... If we don't do something, we'll never get her back." Magnolia Pictures has revealed a new official US trailer for the Irish indie horror film titled You Are Not My Mother, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Kate Dolan. This premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year, and recently played at the Gothenburg Film Festival. In a North Dublin housing estate Char's mum mysteriously goes missing. When she returns without any explanation, Char is determined to uncover the truth of her disappearance and unearth the dark secrets of her family. Obviously something is very wrong with her. The film stars Aoife Spratt, Ingrid Craigie, Jade Jordan, Paul Reid, and Hazel Doupe as Char. The film earned some great reviews at TIFF: "With fantastically committed performances and a deft management of tone, it's one of the better genre films of 2021." "It's easy to kill, but it's much harder to survive." Paramount has unveiled the official trailer for an action thriller called The Contractor, formerly known as Violence of Action. From director Tarik Saleh (The Nile Hilton Incident) comes this thriller about an ex-Special Forces Sergeant who becomes a mercenary working for a private organization. But when his first mission goes awry while overseas, he must evade those trying to kill him while making his way back home. Sounds like the exact same plot as so many of these mercenary or hitman films - something goes wrong, they become the target, must take out others to return alive. Chris Pine stars along with Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs, Eddie Marsan, JD Pardo, Florian Munteanu, and Kiefer Sutherland. This was shot in 2019 and they've been delaying it since 2020, but not sure it'll be worth the wait. It seems as bland & repetitive as every other direct-to-DVD action film recently. Netflix has revealed the new official trailer for a series titled Soil, made in and produced in Belgium, but primarily about a Moroccan community in the country. Here's the setup for this dark comedy series: If a Muslim person passes away in Belgium, he burdens his relatives with a delicate dilemma: "Do we bury him here or in his native country?" Ishmael, better known as "Smile", has devised a solution: "What if we import soil from Morocco into Belgium to bury our deceased?" But without realising it, he's opening Pandora's 'coffin'. Ha. This originally premiered on TV in Belgium last year, and is coming to Netflix soon for everyone else to watch. HBO Max has debuted the full-length official trailer for their new series Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins, who also created the show "People of Earth". Behold - a pirate ship comedy! This is basically trying to be "What We Do in the Shadows" but with pirates, which seems fun? The year is 1717. A wealthy landowner has a midlife crisis and decides to blow up his cushy life to become a pirate. It does not go well. Loosely based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet. Rhys Darby stars, with Taika Waititi as Blackbeard, plus an ensemble cast including Fred Armisen, Nat Faxon, Leslie Jones, Samba Schutte, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, and Joel Fry. "People are going to be asking questions... about them." Vertical Entertainment has revealed the trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Outsiders, formerly known as No Running, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Delmar Washington. This played at the Tribeca Film Festival and American Black Film Festival last year. When high school student Jaylen Brown finds himself under suspicion after his friend disappears during a party, prejudice quickly begins to boil to the surface of his small southern town as all fingers point toward him. Working against the clock to clear his own name, he begins to unravel a massive web of secrets that all point to otherworldly forces at play. The 72nd Berlin Film Festival (also known as just Berlinale locally) is starting to wrap up after a week, and the winners of the annual festival awards were revealed this week at an event held in person in Berlin, including the winner of the coveted Golden Bear for Best Film. That top prize from this year was given to a Catalonian drama about a family of peach farmers titled Alcarràs, directed by Carla Simón. The festival returned to a full-on in-person event in 2022, after transitioning online last year (along with a summer series). And unfortunately it's a really rotten year. The festival didn't have many good films at all to feature, nothing but mediocre premieres. While I'm happy about Alcarràs, it is the only seriously good film in a very weak competition line-up. "Janice - why you out here looking like My Little Pony, girl?" There is nothing like a scary white girl. This short first premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival (and hit BAMcinemaFest) and it's finally showing on the web this year after the director's first feature just played at the 2022 festival. Hair Wolf is a horror comedy short written & directed by filmmaker Mariama Diallo, and it's a must see stylish horror creation. Diallo's debut feature is called Master and just premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival last month - I really enjoyed it and can't wait for everyone to get a look at it. This short shows how talented she is and I'm glad she's working on more film projects. And don't miss Master. Uncork'd Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an indie action thriller titled After the Pandemic, which is clearly capitalizing on the pandemic to sell itself as another post-apocalyptic survival film. The film is set in a near-future scenario in which the death rate for a new virus isn't 1%, but somewhere around 98%. Most of Earth's population has been wiped out. Only the immune have endured as scavengers. Ellie leaves her neighborhood and stumbles across a new city where she meets Quinn, someone who has taken a different approach to the new world. The film stars Eve James, Kannon Smith, Juniper Preacher, Derek Sneddon, Alec McCormick, Gu Sewen, Virginia Fivas, and Leslie Ldmaw. "They said it couldn't be done, but they were wrong!" Quiver has debuted a new trailer for the re-release of a cult comedy from the 70s called The First Nudie Musical, made by filmmakers Mark Haggard & Bruce Kimmel. This first opened in 1976 and is getting a VOD / Blu-ray re-release this February in the US. The movie is a comedy starring Cindy Williams, Stephen Nathan, and Bruce Kimmel. Nathan plays Harry Schechter, heir to a Hollywood studio who's forced to make a musical comedy porno in order to stave off bankruptcy. The movie features a series of farcical lewd musical numbers in the style of classical Hollywood musical comedies including: "Orgasm", "Lesbian Butch Dyke", and "Dancing Dildos." The movie has a low-budget feel, with a "musical-within-a-movie" theme in the tradition of Singin' in the Rain, but with satirical sexual humor. If you're curious, don't worry there's no nudity in this trailer, but there will be some in the film (it was banned in New Zealand + rated X in the UK). "I can't move, I can't sing." Warner Bros has revealed the first full-length (an epic 3 minutes!) trailer for Elvis, the next ravishing Baz Luhrmann musical arriving in theaters this year. It has been delayed for a while and is finally set for release in theaters starting June this summer. The movie chronicles the life and career of rock-and-roll legend Elvis Presley, starring Austin Butler (seen in Yoga Hosers, The Dead Don't Die, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, "The Shannara Chronicles") as the musician. The huge cast includes Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Luke Bracey, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Dacre Montgomery, David Wenham, Richard Roxburgh, Kate Mulvany, Elizabeth Cullen, & Natasha Bassett, plus Kelvin Harrison Jr. as B.B. Paramount + Saban have revealed the first official trailer for an action thriller called Panama, the latest from filmmaker Mark Neveldine, who hasn't made anything since The Vatican Tapes in 2015 (along with the two Cranks, Gamer, and that one Ghost Rider). An ex-marine is hired by a defense contractor to travel to Panama to complete an arms deal. In the process he becomes involved with the U.S. invasion of Panama during the political upheaval in the country in 1989, and learns an important lesson about the true nature of political power. Cole Hauser stars as "Becker", along with Charlie Weber, Katie Katzman, Jackie Cruz, and Mel Gibson. This doesn't look bad, but doesn't look so good either. Showtime has revealed the first official trailer for a new series called The First Lady, the start of a new series about First Ladies in the White House. It's currently scheduled to premiere streaming in April this spring. And all 10 of the episodes are directed by Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier. A revelatory reframing of American leadership through the lens of these First Ladies. Starring Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt, this series delves deep into the Ladies’ personal and political lives. Exploring everything from their journeys to Washington, family life, and world-changing political contributions, the impact of the White House’s women is no longer hidden from view. Now that it has been 21 years since 9/11, more and more films are being made about the aftermath of this tragedy – including the way America responded with torture and heinous decisions in an attempt to punish everyone responsible. Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush is another film that digs into the same kind of story as the one told in The Mauritanian, about one innocent individual who was (illegally) locked up for years in Guantanamo Bay by the US over exaggerated suspicions that were never proven. There have been a growing number of films about Guatananmo and how horrible this place is, between Camp X-Ray, and even Paul Schrader's The Card Counter (which dips into this in an unusual way). "No one survives decay... Everyone cracks and fades..." A horror comedy musical about a taxidermist?! Yes that exists! Stuffed is a BAFTA-nominated short musical, made by Theo Rhys with music by Joss Holden-Rea. Yep, it's even nominated for Best British Short at the BAFTAs, in addition to other awards it has won. And it's online to watch now (check out the vintage website, too). Stuffed premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival won the Audience Award there, before stopping by other film festivals throughout last year. It's a 20-minute musical about a taxidermist who dreams of stuffing a human, and the man she meets online so afraid of ageing he volunteers to be her specimen. An unexpected romantic spark complicates their plans. If you think "how can they turn this into a musical?" oh just wait and see! This stars Alison Fitzjohn and Anthony Young.
