"Why are you the only man who wants to stay with me?" Hulu has revealed a teaser trailer on Valentine's Day for the psychological thriller Deep Water, about a married couple who have fallen out of love. The film stars Ben Affleck & Ana de Armas and is skipping theaters entirely, heading straight to Hulu this March. This is the project when Affleck & de Armas first met and started dating, even though their romance as seen through the gossip rags seems a lot like the plot of the film anyway. Their loveless marriage is held together only by a precarious arrangement whereby, in order to avoid the messiness of divorce, Melinda is allowed to take any number of lovers as long as she does not desert her family. But her husband becomes a suspect when her lovers start showing up dead. Is he the one with a problem or is something else going on? "It's the bonds within the pride, the pack, and the herd, that allow each member to succeed." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for another nature documentary titled Surviving Paradise: A Family Tale, all about the animals of the Okavango Delta. The delta is a vast oasis, isolated from the rest of the world by unforgiving desert, found in Botswana in the middle of Africa (check Google Maps). Big cats may appear to reign here, but in reality, the fate of every creature, great and small, is intertwined. This film explores the blueprints for building the perfect world, managing it sustainably, and maintaining it – despite extremes of drought, famine, and flood. Most crucially, the film exciting will spotlight those passing the secret formula on to their descendents. Sounds like it's a bit more than just your usual discovery channel film! Featuring cinematography by Brad Bestelink, and narration by Regé-Jean Page. "From here on out, we are playing to win!" HBO has revealed the full-length official trailer for Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, a new series about the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. This is a dramatic series, not a doc, and is also the project that Will Ferrell and Adam McKay fought about. The first episode is directed by Adam McKay, who is (of course) a big time Lakers fan. The series tells the story of the rise of basketball Hall Of Famer Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah) and the lengths that one man, Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly), will go in pursuit of securing a basketball dynasty. The cast includes all kinds of fun names: Sean Patrick Small as Larry Bird, Sally Field as Jessie Buss, Adrien Brody as Pat Riley, Mike Epps as Pryor, Max E. Blue Fox Entertainment has revealed the official US trailer for the French romance Eiffel, set during the building of the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris at the end of the 1800s. The film not only tells of the struggles of celebrated engineer Gustave Eiffel while he creates this famous landmark and works to build it, but also his romance with another woman, a "long lost, forbidden passion that inspires him to change the Paris skyline forever." Oh my. The government is asking Eiffel to design something spectacular for the 1889 Paris World Fair, but Eiffel simply wants to design the subway. Suddenly, everything changes when Eiffel crosses paths with a mysterious woman from his past. Starring Romain Duris as Gustave Eiffel, Emma Mackey as Adrienne Bourgès, and Pierre Deladonchamps as Antoine Restac, with Armande Boulanger, Philippe Hérisson, Andranic Manet, Juliette Blanche. "This was never meant for your eyes, I'm afraid..." Following festival premieres last year, the first official trailer for an indie horror anthology feature titled Underneath has arrived online. Featuring five terrifying tales bound together by something that waits from beyond... Evil in Chapters! "Underneath is a grassroots, self-financed anthology comprised of five chapters, an epilogue, and several mind-bending vignettes that are all bound together by something unnatural and sinister." The project was conceived by John Nicol, who co-wrote and directed many of the segments as well. "An unstable individual who is convinced that ominous cracks in his basement may in fact be a breach into Hell itself... Is he in direct communication with demons, or has he opened a portal into their realm of terror? Poisoned by the revelation of five tales, he succumbs to the mental strain on his increasingly damaged mind." "She was fearless!" Amazon has revealed the full official trailer for the documentary film Lucy and Desi, made by actress / comedian / filmmaker Amy Poehler. This recently premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival to mostly positive reviews, as it's a comprehensive doc that covers their entire lives from start to finish. A much more elegant and thorough look into the lives of Lucy and Desi, all the good and bad, than the recent Being the Ricardos film, but they certainly go hand-and-hand and play well as a double feature. Poehler's doc Lucy and Desi explores the rise of comedian icon Lucille Ball, her relationship with Desi Arnaz, and how their groundbreaking sitcom "I Love Lucy" forever changed the television world, cementing her legacy long after her death in 1989. And it's only rated PG! Near perfect use of Lana Del Rey's "Young & Beautiful" in this trailer, too. "Do I look as if I'd turn down a villa in the South of France?!" Focus Features has revealed the full-length official trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era, now opening in US theaters this May after being delayed from March this year. A New Era is a continuation of the big screen cinematic Downton Abbey story, with the first film opening back in 2019 following the TV series. This new film will see the Crawley family and Downton staff receiving a royal visit from the King and Queen of Great Britain, but that's not it. There's also the buzz of a "motion picture" filming on the Estate, plus a visit to a mysterious villa in the South of France connected to Violet Crawley. What is going on with this villa? Searchlight Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for Fresh, the freaky new horror comedy thriller marking the feature debut of filmmaker Mimi Cave. This was a HUGE hit at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival just a few weeks ago, one of the best reviewed films that everyone was talking about. Don't miss it!! Fresh is definitely this year's Get Out, but I don't want to explain anything more than that. The horrors of modern dating seen through one young woman's defiant battle to survive her new boyfriend's unusual appetites. "Say someone did hide a message in those tapes - do you really want to be the guy to figure out what that means?" Lightbulb Film in the UK has revealed another full UK trailer for their release of the indie mystery horror-thriller Broadcast Signal Intrusion, made by filmmaker Jacob Gentry. This originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival and opened last fall in the US (it's out now to watch in the US only if you to check it out). The film lands in UK cinemas this March. In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts that took over antenna TV signals, and he becomes obsessed with uncovering the conspiracy behind them, while wondering if any of this might connect to the disappearance of his wife years ago. Harry Shum Jr. stars as James, with an indie cast including Chris Sullivan, Kelley Mack, Steve Pringle, and Justin Welborn. I caught this at SXSW last year and enjoyed it, there's some intriguing style and mystery within. This trailer reveals more than the US one, but not everything. "Rescuing the world takes a pair." Ohh what a tagline. They're back!! Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is an all-new, never-done-before, completely 100% original movie (based on pre-existing IP owned by Disney). A comeback 30 years in the making, the hybrid live-action/CG animated action-comedy catches up with the former Disney Afternoon television stars in modern-day Los Angeles. There's a really fun transition moment in this teaser where they go from the classic 2D TV animation style to the "modern" 3D CGI style, and it kinda works? But don't forget that they tried to do this with Tom & Jerry, and it didn't out that great. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers stars John Mulaney as Chip, Andy Samberg as Dale, and KiKi Layne, plus Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogen, J.K. "You owe a debt to a helluva lot more people than just me." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for Windfall, a new "Hitchcockian thriller" following a wealthy couple who arrive at their vacation home only to find it's being robbed. This is the latest film by filmmaker Charlie McDowell, best known for his Sundance gems The One I Love and The Discovery. The concept for this one, created by co-star Jason Segel, wonders "what if" your safe space at home "gets invaded and doesn't feel safe anymore?" Starring Jason Segel, Lily Collins, Jesse Plemons, and that's it. "The story really exposes all three of us," Collins explains. "We're all flawed, and the story showcases and starts to unearth how those flaws come about and that none of us are innocent. And I feel like it is about choice and the choices we make and the choices we don't make and how that does set you off on a very specific path." Oh this looks VERY good. Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a new mystery crime thriller series titled Pieces of Her, based on Karin Slaughter's bestselling novel of the same name. The best part about this is that stars the superbly talented Toni Collette, in a role where it seems she has some hidden sides. When a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall with her mother suddenly explodes into violence, an adrift young woman's conception of her mother is forever altered. As figures from her past start to resurface, she is forced to go on the run and on that journey, begins to piece together the truth of her mother's previous identity and uncovers secrets of her childhood. Also co-starring Bella Heathcote, with Jessica Barden, Jacob Scipio, Joe Dempsie, Aaron Jeffery, Omari Hardwick, Gil Birmingham, David Wenham, Calum Worthy, Nicholas Burton, and Terry O’Quinn. "Open your third eye... and prepare to die!" Mutiny Pictures already released this indie Troma-esque horror film last fall, but we're just catching up with it now thanks to a tip from Twitter. How did we miss this last year?! I Need You Dead is a homemade, gross-out, wacky horror comedy creation made by the filmmaker Rocko Zevenbergen. After a moment of total teenage angst, a young punk soon finds himself at odds with a psychedelic monster of his own creation. It's described by the filmmaker as "the type of party that starts on top of the world, but by the end has your head halfway down a toilet." There is a new hallucinogen going around, but it brings out more than just some good vibes. The film stars Estevan Muñoz, Sidra Morgan-Montoya, Lloyd Kaufman, Tim Coyle, and Michael Morrison. "It's not your mother up there... If we don't do something, we'll never get her back." Magnolia Pictures has revealed a new official US trailer for the Irish indie horror film titled You Are Not My Mother, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Kate Dolan. This premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year, and recently played at the Gothenburg Film Festival. In a North Dublin housing estate Char's mum mysteriously goes missing. When she returns without any explanation, Char is determined to uncover the truth of her disappearance and unearth the dark secrets of her family. Obviously something is very wrong with her. The film stars Aoife Spratt, Ingrid Craigie, Jade Jordan, Paul Reid, and Hazel Doupe as Char. The film earned some great reviews at TIFF: "With fantastically committed performances and a deft management of tone, it's one of the better genre films of 2021." "It's easy to kill, but it's much harder to survive." Paramount has unveiled the official trailer for an action thriller called The Contractor, formerly known as Violence of Action. From director Tarik Saleh (The Nile Hilton Incident) comes this thriller about an ex-Special Forces Sergeant who becomes a mercenary working for a private organization. But when his first mission goes awry while overseas, he must evade those trying to kill him while making his way back home. Sounds like the exact same plot as so many of these mercenary or hitman films - something goes wrong, they become the target, must take out others to return alive. Chris Pine stars along with Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs, Eddie Marsan, JD Pardo, Florian Munteanu, and Kiefer Sutherland. This was shot in 2019 and they've been delaying it since 2020, but not sure it'll be worth the wait. It seems as bland & repetitive as every other direct-to-DVD action film recently. Netflix has revealed the new official trailer for a series titled Soil, made in and produced in Belgium, but primarily about a Moroccan community in the country. Here's the setup for this dark comedy series: If a Muslim person passes away in Belgium, he burdens his relatives with a delicate dilemma: "Do we bury him here or in his native country?" Ishmael, better known as "Smile", has devised a solution: "What if we import soil from Morocco into Belgium to bury our deceased?" But without realising it, he's opening Pandora's 'coffin'. Ha. This originally premiered on TV in Belgium last year, and is coming to Netflix soon for everyone else to watch. HBO Max has debuted the full-length official trailer for their new series Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins, who also created the show "People of Earth". Behold - a pirate ship comedy! This is basically trying to be "What We Do in the Shadows" but with pirates, which seems fun? The year is 1717. A wealthy landowner has a midlife crisis and decides to blow up his cushy life to become a pirate. It does not go well. Loosely based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet. Rhys Darby stars, with Taika Waititi as Blackbeard, plus an ensemble cast including Fred Armisen, Nat Faxon, Leslie Jones, Samba Schutte, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, and Joel Fry. "People are going to be asking questions... about them." Vertical Entertainment has revealed the trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller titled Outsiders, formerly known as No Running, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Delmar Washington. This played at the Tribeca Film Festival and American Black Film Festival last year. When high school student Jaylen Brown finds himself under suspicion after his friend disappears during a party, prejudice quickly begins to boil to the surface of his small southern town as all fingers point toward him. Working against the clock to clear his own name, he begins to unravel a massive web of secrets that all point to otherworldly forces at play. The film stars Skylan Brooks, Shane West, Hart Denton, Diamond White, Rutina Wesley, Bill Engvall, and Taryn Manning. The 72nd Berlin Film Festival (also known as just Berlinale locally) is starting to wrap up after a week, and the winners of the annual festival awards were revealed this week at an event held in person in Berlin, including the winner of the coveted Golden Bear for Best Film. That top prize from this year was given to a Catalonian drama about a family of peach farmers titled Alcarràs, directed by Carla Simón. The festival returned to a full-on in-person event in 2022, after transitioning online last year (along with a summer series). And unfortunately it's a really rotten year. The festival didn't have many good films at all to feature, nothing but mediocre premieres. While I'm happy about Alcarràs, it is the only seriously good film in a very weak competition line-up.
