"Can you trust this man... after what you did to him?" Oooh - what did she do?! Apple TV has revealed an official trailer for a thriller series titled Liaison, which will be available later this month on the streaming service. The descriptions for this so far are all a bit vague: An international struggle between governments and the hackers who just want to watch it all burn. So it's kind of like Mr. Robot, or not? Something else? It stars Vincent Cassel and Eva Green as the main characters - former lovers caught in the middle of it all. Liaison is a high-stakes, contemporary thriller exploring how the mistakes of our past have the potential to destroy our future, mixing action with an unpredictable, multilayered plot - "espionage and political intrigue play out against a story of passionate and enduring love." Shout has revealed an official trailer for an indie documentary film about America called Refuge, formerly known as Clarkston. Refuge is set in the "most diverse square mile in America" - Clarkston, Georgia (see Google Maps). A stirring and inspiring blueprint for the healing of America, a captivating story of two unlikely friends who transform their anguish and tribulations into compassion and understanding. The doc illustrates the false promises of hate and reveals where real and lasting refuge is found. "Where there is love, there is refuge." Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for another indie horror film streaming soon titled Spoonful of Sugar, the latest from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan. This premiered at Fantastic Fest last year and also played at the Cucalorus Film Festival. A disturbed babysitter experiences a sexual awakening while using LSD to alternatively treat a seemingly “sick” kid. Morgan Saylor stars as Millicent, who is working on her thesis about children with severe allergies. She's hired to babysit Johnny, a sickly, mute child who suffers from every allergy under the sun. "You never know when your break's coming..." Elevation Pictures in Canada has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Brother, a Canadian feature about two Black brothers, Michael and Francis, sons of Caribbean immigrants maturing into young men amidst Toronto's pulsing 1990's hip-hop scene. This film premiered at TIFF 2022 last year, and it also played at the Vancouver, London, and Busan Film Festivals. Exploring themes of masculinity, identity and family, a mystery unfolds during the sweltering summer of 1991, and escalating tensions set off a series of events that change the course of the brothers' lives forever. Brother crafts a timely story about the profound bond between siblings, the resilience of a community and the irrepressible power of music. A short about a cannibal? Bon appetit. Believe it or not, this won the Best Animated Short BAFTA Award a few years ago. Our friends at Short of the Week pulled this out of their archives to share again - we never posted it before. Edmond is a stop-motion animated short from 2015 made by filmmaker Nina Gantz. Edmond's impulse to love and be close to others is strong... Maybe too strong. As he stands alone by a lake contemplating his options, he goes on a journey backwards through his life, revisiting his defining moments in search of the root of his desires. He "slips through floors into the past and the deepest parts of his psyche in his pursuit of self-understanding" as a cannibal. Gravitas Ventures has released the official trailer for a supernatural thriller titled ReBroken, an indie horror film from filmmaker Kenny Yates making his feature directorial debut. It'll be out to watch in March if anyone is curious to see where it goes. A devastated father receives vinyl recordings from a mysterious stranger that allow him to communicate with his recently deceased daughter. After the listens to the strange vinyl, he starts to notice messages and signs from his daughter, making him even more obsessed with trying to figure out how to bring her back. "You're like a real life Rambo!" Amazon has revealed a brand new trailer for a repackaged and recut Quibi series titled Die Hart, which will be (re)released for streaming on Prime Video later in February. This was initially made as one of these dumb Quibi series, where you view short snippets at a time on the app, and the service failed pretty quickly because it was a bad idea all along. The footage has been edited into a movie version, which will be streaming only. It follows a fictionalized version of Kevin Hart as he tries to become an action movie star. He attends a school run by Ron Wilcox (played by Travolta), where he attempts to learn the ropes on how to become one of the industry's most coveted action stars. Ugh. Originally written for Bruce Willis but Willis didn't understand the concept of Quibi (phew!) and turned it down replaced by John Travolta. The cast includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett, and Jean Reno. This looks so bad, stay away folks. But props to them for releasing it anyway. German distributor Weltkino Filmverleih has revealed two official trailers for the film Seneca, the latest from director Robert Schwentke who has been working in Hollywood for years (he last made Snake Eyes). The full title is actually Seneca - On the Creation of Earthquakes, and this is premiering at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival later this month, with a German release set in March. A look at the relationship between Seneca and Nero, the infamous Emperor he mentored since childhood and who accused him of plotting his assassination. The plot revolves around Nero telling him to kill himself, and how Seneca then responds. "Schwentke has made a pyrotechnic display of a film that is almost peerless in its use of over-the-top punchlines, splatter-sarcasm and love of verbal precocity. "I believe in the theatrical experience." Paramount Pictures has debuted a new featurette for the 2023 re-release of Titanic, James Cameron's epic romantic tale of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. "Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the timeless love story this Valentine's Day Weekend." This is opening on the big screen again in 4K 3D (along with HFR screenings) and will play throughout February. This video focuses on the cast and filmmakers reflecting on making Titanic now 25 years later, to compliment the re-release trailer. With a cast headed by Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film is an epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the "unsinkable" Titanic, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. He begins to rethink his life and his sexuality after tangling with Whetu, a gay Maori boy who spends his days in an old shack down by the beach. The two are forced to navigate isolation, homophobia, and the brutality of small-town life. As Jim discovers what it means to be gay, he realizes how little strength is connected to heroism. Another must watch short film creation from French filmmaker / editor Fabrice Mathieu. His latest is In the Shadow (also titled Dans l'ombre in French), a clever mash-up of film noir B&W footage to create an intriguing story about a shadow escaping his "wearer" in a city full of mystery and darkness. "A shadow is telling its life story with his 'Wearer', a flesh & bone double, who one day it decides to get rid of..." This is a proof-of-concept pitch made entirely from existing footage from more than 60 movies showing the most beautiful shadows in cinema history, from Nosferatu to Sin City to The Third Man, and everything else in-between.
