When two drifters traveling through the desert stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found, the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment. The other remains and must endure harsh desert elements, ravenous wild dogs, and mysterious intruders, whilst battling the sinking suspicion that he has been abandoned to his own fate. Zac Efron co-stars with Anthony Hayes, who also directs the film. Not to be confused with the other Gold film starring McConaughey. We featured the first trailer a few months ago. Netflix has unveiled a fun teaser trailer for their upcoming crime series Clark, made by Swedish filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund (known for the films Spun, Lords of Chaos, Polar). Clark tells the story of the Swedish criminal who gave rise to the idea of "The Stockholm Syndrome" during a failed bank robbery in Stockholm in the 1970s. Clark Olofsson has been referred to as a "celebrity gangster", and over his many decades has managed to escape prisons and commit robberies all over Europe. Åkerlund explains: "Clark is the story about the most politically incorrect man, who lived the most politically incorrect life. These are the kinds of stories I always look for. It’s an ultra-violent, witty, emotional, real and surreal biography to put a face to the name 'Stockholm Syndrome', but it isn’t just about the Norrmalmstorg Robbery. Who would've thought that a documentary about some bozo that invented a new bulletproof vest would be this fascinating and this unsettling?! But that's exactly why I had to watch this film and find out what it's all about and holy sh*t, it's totally nuts! This guy is nuts! But that is the story, that's the entire point of making this film. Another tale of the "American Dream" gone wrong. Iranian-American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani (making his first doc after many features including Man Push Cart, Chop Shop, At Any Price, 99 Homes, The White Tiger) has cooked up his version "Tiger King" with this documentary called 2nd Chance, which just premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The engrossing documentary tells the story of Richard Davis, a doofus from Michigan that somehow invented some lightweight bulletproof vests as part of a police fanboy fantasy. Netflix has debuted the full-length official trailer for their epic three-part documentary series jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, looking back at the prolific rise & musical genius of hip-hop mastermind Kanye West. This doc just premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival recently. Their intro: "You can't manufacture a project like jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy; it takes decades of vision, commitment, prayers, and perspective to produce. It seems providential that Coodie & Chike should be the ones to make the definitive film about [his] career thus far, as they were the filmmakers who introduced him to the masses with their documentary music video for 'Through the Wire.' "I'm not making this up!" Dark Sky Films has revealed a new trailer for Take Back The Night, an intense vigilante horror-thriller made by filmmaker Gia Elliot. This premiered at a bunch of genre film festivals last year, including the Telluride Horror Fest, and is arriving on VOD in March this year. Finding herself the victim of a violent monster attack, Jane launches a vigilante campaign to hunt the beast that tried to kill her. Her troubling history of drug use & mental illness causes her family, community, and authorities to question the authenticity of her account. Suddenly alone in her fight, Jane starts to doubt if this Monster exists at all. Emma Fitzpatrick (seen in Before We Go, Sleepwalker, and "Dan Is Dead") stars as Jane, with Angela Gulner, Jennifer Lafleur, Sibongile Mlambo, Corina Kinnear, Kati Sharp, Natalie D'Amico, and Jess Varley. This looks stylish & terrifying, but also looks like an extremely obvious metaphor about sexual assault "monsters" (which they are!) and how hard it is to fight them. Netflix has revealed the official trailer for a French action-thriller titled Restless, also known as Sans répit, arriving on Netflix later this month. Another of these French films about a sketchy cop getting into trouble. After going to extremes to cover up an accident, a corrupt cop's life spirals out of control when he starts receiving threats from a mysterious witness. When the investigation of the missing person is given to one of his colleagues, and an anonymous witness tries to blackmail him, things start to get really out of hand. IFC Films has revealed the first teaser trailer for a wacky film titled Flux Gourmet, a sort of strange indie horror dark comedy about a "food collective", made by the director of Berberian Sound Studio. Their goal is to produce art and explore the sounds created by food. Uh, yeah. Set at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders. It stars Asa Butterfield, Gwendoline Christie, Ariane Labed, Fatma Mohamed, Makis Papadimitriou, Leo Bill, Richard Bremmer. This is premiering at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival this month before a release coming up this summer. "Wait, you have 10 kids!?" Disney has revealed an official trailer for their new remake of Cheaper by the Dozen, an "diverse" take on the family comedy. The original Cheaper by the Dozen opened in 2003 with Steve Martin with a big cast including Hilary Duff and Piper Perabo. "Your eyes are getting worse!" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled a trailer for The Other Me, an indie drama from a Georgian filmmaker named Giga Agladze. This was quietly dumped this month without marketing or promotion at all, and no festival debuts. Jim Sturgess stars as an architect who is diagnosed with a rare eye disease, sending him into a surreal reality in which he sees people's "true motives". As these visions get more intolerable, he falls for a mysterious woman and confronts the truth about his own identity. The film's cast also includes Rhona Mitra, Orla Brady, Andreja Pejic, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, and Jordi Mollà. It's also executive produced by David Lynch, which is a bit strange. "I got a lot of things to do... And I need my memory to do it." Apple TV+ has revealed an official trailer for an upcoming streaming series titled The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, starring Samuel L. Jackson as "an ailing man forgotten by his family, by his friends, and by even himself." So sad. Suddenly left without his trusted caretaker, Ptolemy Grey is assigned to the care of an orphaned teenager named Robyn. When they learn about a treatment that will restore Ptolemy’s dementia-addled memories, it takes them all on a journey toward shocking truths. The six-episode series will debut will debut this March on Apple TV+. The cast also includes Dominique Fishback, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams, and Damon Gupton. Well this looks quite interesting. Jackson looks better than he has been for years with a deep, complex performance. And I'm glad this film explores the challenges that come with dementia in this way. "Something happened on the island a few years ago." Well Go USA has revealed another official trailer for time loop horror thriller 6:45, made by filmmaker Craig Singer. This already opened last year, apparently although we never heard about it, and it lands on DVD coming up in March (which is what this new trailer is for). What if one of the best days of your life suddenly turned into your very worst nightmare? What if you were forced to relive that same day again and again? A couple embarks on a weekend getaway only to find the island curiously deserted. After stumbling upon the town’s dark secret, they trigger a time loop, forcing them to relive a demented cycle of terror with seemingly no means of escape. The film stars Michael Reed, Augie Duke, Armen Garo, and Thomas G. Waites. "Is it about what's right, or what's practical?" Grasshopper Film has revealed a new US trailer for Friends and Strangers, an experimental indie from Australia which originally premiered at last year's Rotterdam Film Festival. The film also played at New Directors/New Films Fest and the Chicago Film Festival last year. Friends and Strangers follows two upper-middle class wanderers in a dryly comic exploration displacement and ennui in contemporary Australia. Reviews talk about how eccentric but uniquely amusing it is: "Friends and Strangers had me cackling at its dry and gleeful absurdity... it's mumblecore par excellence but laced with a satire of white Australia and its historical amnesia." I can't figure out what to make of the couple in the middle of this trailer. Is it about them, and what's happening to them, or about something else going on and they're just a part of the bigger picture? One of the first things animators learn when starting out is how to animate a bouncing ball, an important part of mastering the techniques. This entertaining animation project continues that intriguing concept by inviting collaboration worldwide with a simple pitch: pass the ball. Created by animation filmmaker Nathan Boey, Pass the Ball features a total of 40 unique animated segments. His idea: "I always liked how rappers were able to collaborate with other rappers by featuring them on their songs. That doesn’t exist the same way in the film world." So he got 40 different animators to create a 3 second animation of a ball, then pass it on to someone in another country. Each person "picks up where the other left off" and continues. And after years of working on this, the final film is ready! It's terrific! And features so many different animation styles. "I have so many things I want to tell you..." Screen Media Films has unveiled an official trailer for a comedy called Family Squares, which is a fun name riffing on the classic "Hollywood Squares" TV game show. It's also a reference to this being a Zoom collective film, featuring segments shot remotely by each of the actors. It's a story inspired by director Stephanie Laing's own mother's passing in 2019, eventually made during the pandemic. The film is about a family matriarch, Grandma Mabel, who passes away suddenly but in her last days tries to bring her dysfunctional family together. Digitally. The ensemble cast includes June Squibb, with Ann Dowd, Judy Greer, Billy Magnussen, Casey Wilson, Henry Winkler, Sam Richardson, Margo Martindale, Timothy Simons, Zoe Chao, Scott MacArthur, Elsie Fisher, Jessica Miesel, and Maclaren Laing. Narration by Rob Reiner. Of course it's rated R only for the language. The complete list of nominees for the 94th Academy Awards, the most prestigious award in Hollywood, have been announced today (from Oscars.org). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees via live broadcast. The nominations from 2021 are, as usual, an exciting and intriguing set of nominees with plenty of surprises and expected picks - including Drive My Car from Japan, the animated documentary Flee, and Spielberg's West Side Story sneaking in. Jane Campion's excellent The Power of the Dog has a total of 12 nominations, and Denis Villeneuve's Dune has a total of 10 nominations - the two clear frontrunners out of all of the films from last year. "Our first test flight is a go." Pixar has revealed a full-length official trailer for Lightyear, one of the new Pixar Animation Studios movies arriving in 2022. Let's goooo!! This one is a sort of prequel to Toy Story, focusing entirely on Buzz Lightyear as a spin-off solo movie about the Space Ranger. Chris Evans will be voicing the real Buzz Lightyear, the astronaut within the Toy Story universe who inspired the action figure. The plot involves Buzz being marooned in an alien planet and having to figure out a way to build a spaceship and get home. But that only seems like the beginning of this story! Joining the previously announced Chris Evans, who is voicing Buzz, are Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, and Taika Waititi as a group of ambitious recruits. Peter Sohn voices Buzz's robot companion, Sox the cat, and the cast also includes the voices of Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. Uhhh you guys, this looks AMAZING! "My wife is not your patient, Doctor, Justin is." An official trailer has debuted for this indie psychological thriller titled Trouble Sleeping, made by the Canadian filmmaker Robert Adetuyi. This has taken years to finally get a release after first unveiling in 2018, but perhaps there's a reason it has taken so long. Just take a look at the trailer below. Tormented by the memories of her late-husband's suicide, a woman's life is further complicated by the arrival of her stepson, who apparently will soon inherit all of his father's wealth. But something else is amiss. The film stars Vanessa Angel, Billy Zane, Rick Otto, Ingrid Eskeland, Kale Clauson, and Fred Stoller. This film looks especially forgettable and bland, it's so obvious what's going on from this trailer you can probably figure out exactly how it's going to end. Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for their Polish mystery thriller series Hold Tight, arriving on Netflix sometime later in 2022. This sounds pretty cool? Magdalena Boczarska and Leszek Lichota will play the main roles in the Polish original - the second adaptation of a Harlan Coben book. They star as a couple in a happy marriage, Anna and Michał Barczyk. Their son, Adam, will be played by Krzysztof Oleksyn. Affluent Warsaw suburbs, close-knit residents living an idyllic life. All hell breaks loose when an eighteen-year-old Adam vanishes into thin air. Then violence escalates when parents try to protect their adolescent children who take matters into their own hands. Both Agnieszka Grochowska and Grzegorz Damięcki, known from the previous Polish adaptation of Harlan Coben, The Woods, will also return to their roles. The series will also feature Jacek Poniedziałek, Justyna Wasilewska, Wiktoria Gorodeckaja and Bartłomiej Topa. "What's better than being tough, is being prepared." Lionsgate has revealed a new official trailer for the crime thriller For the Love of Money, from director Leslie Small. This actually opened in select theaters last year, but we seemed to have missed it entirely. It also premiered at the Peachtree Village Film Festival last fall. And will be out on DVD/BR starting in March, which is why there's a new trailer for it. Keri Hilson stars as Gigi Davis, a determined single mom who walked away from a billion-dollar family business to chart her own path. When she is pushed to her limit, she turns to the only world she knows, a world she's spent a lifetime running from, in order to fight to protect her daughter. The cast includes Katt Williams, Keith Sweat, LisaRaye McCoy, Rotimi, DC Young Fly, Jason Mitchell, and Jazzy Jade. "Don't let the blues die." IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for The Torch, the groovy new music documentary about the blues guitar icon Buddy Guy. This originally premiered back in 2019 at the Chicago Film Festival, and is finally getting a release coming up this winter. As an intro: Buddy Guy is an exponent of Chicago blues who has influenced generations of guitarists including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr. and John Mayer. At 83, he remains the standard bearer for the blues, an icon determined to see the art form live on for much longer after he's gone. Enter guitar phenom Quinn Sullivan, who has been mentored by Guy since he was a young kid. This stirring documentary, amplified by electrifying musical performances, charts the guidance Guy received from the likes of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf while observing the Grammy-winner passing his wisdom to the next generation.
