Netflix has unveiled the trailer for a sweet new romantic comedy called Your Place or Mine, marking the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. She is an acclaimed writer, creator of the series "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend", as well as the scripts for The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, Morning Glory, We Bought a Zoo, and Annie, now she's directing her first film. Debbie and Peter are best friends and total opposites. She craves routine with her son in LA; he thrives on change in NYC. When they swap houses and lives for a week they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need. This sounds a lot like The Holiday, but more about the long-distance romance than the Christmas-themed vibes. "I'm gonna take a billion dollars - and aim it in your direction." Apple has debuted the full official trailer for the movie Sharper, a "neo noir" con comedy set in New York City. Sharper unfolds within the secrets of New York City, from the penthouses of Fifth Avenue all the way out to the many shadowy corners of Queens. Motivations are suspect and expectations are turned upside down when nothing is as it seems. It's described as a "psychological thriller" but looks much more like an intricate noir crime thriller, taking on the snobby, wealthy world of NYC. The script for this film was on the "Black List" before being produced by Apple and A24. The excellent ensemble cast features Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, Brianna Middleton, Darren Goldstein, & John Lithgow. This is getting both a theatrical release and streaming debut, hence the partnership between these two distributors. Well I'm in!! It's Me, Margaret, an adaptation of the beloved Judy Blume novel of the same name. This is set to open in theaters nationwide at the end of April, just before the summer movie season kicks off. When her family moves from the city to the suburbs, 11-year-old Margaret navigates new friends, feelings, and the beginning of adolescence. This adaptation stars Rachel McAdams as her mother, along with Abby Ryder Fortson as Margert, plus Kathy Bates as her grandmother. It also stars Benny Safdie and is written & directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, of the outstanding coming-of-age film The Edge of Seventeen previously. "Ally, this has gone way too far!" Amazon has revealed a trailer for a romantic drama called Somebody That I Used to Know, the latest film directed by actor Dave Franco. He doesn't even star in this one! This is arriving on Feb 10th during Valentine's Day time for lovers (or not) to enjoy. On a trip to her hometown, workaholic Ally reminisces with her old ex Sean and questions everything about the person she's become. Things only get more confusing when she meets Cassidy, who reminds her of the person she used to be. This is the latest project from animation filmmaker Everett Downing Jr., who won an Oscar for co-directing the short film Hair Love a few years ago. "Perhaps you're not searching for something... Perhaps you're running away from something..." Ohh sh*t this rules!! Another must watch short film to enjoy, highly recommend watching this. The Rock of Ages is made by Australian filmmaker Eron Sheean, though it's really an Icelandic production. The distant past. A soldier of uncertain provenance (of which army? which era?) stumbles through a vast, desolate landscape, attempting to outrun the evil he's done. While fleeing his enemies, he encounters an odd talking rock which promises to grant his deepest desire. Starring Tómas Lemarquis as the soldier, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the rock. The talking rock is an actual practical set piece, animated by a puppeteer - Izabela Claudia Mos. It was shot on Iceland, hence why it all looks so gorgeous. Off to solve another mystery. Open Road Films has revealed an official trailer for a film titled Marlowe, a gripping noir crime thriller set in late 30s Los Angeles. It's opening in US theaters in February after initially premiering at the San Sebastian Film Festival last year in the fall. The classic noir plot follows a brooding, down on his luck detective who is hired to find the ex-lover of a glamorous heiress. He soon discovers that underneath the missing man's disappearance lies a web of corruption that puts him right in the crosshairs of several of the city's richest, and most dangerous constituents. Liam Neeson stars as the detective Philip Marlowe, who's also joined by Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ian Hart, Colm Meaney, Danny Huston, and Alan Cumming. "It's just a war." Is it, though?? Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for an action movie war thriller called Ambush, the first film directed by veteran producer Mark Burman. This Vietnam War thriller will be out to watch in February, another of these dime-a-dozen forgettable action films they're dropping out all the time now. A group of young elite commandos, led by Captain Drummond are tasked with collecting highly classified information that can change the fate of the war. Gravitas has revealed an official US trailer for an Australian coming-of-age drama titled Ocean Boy, which is the rather generic US title for this film. The original Australian title is Bosch & Rockit, which is the name of the two kids that the film is about - and it fits better than something as bland as "Ocean Boy". Inspired by true events, the film is stirring, provocative and peppered with laconic Australian humor, a compelling story about the light and shade of life, reflecting strength & vulnerability. In the late summer along the coast, Bosch, a young father goes on the run for drug dealing with his surf gang. In tow is his son, Rockit, who believes he's on a magical holiday. "In the golden age of documentary, who benefits?" Dogwoof has revealed an official trailer for Subject, an intriguing new meta documentary from filmmakers Camilla Hall & Jennifer Tiexiera. This first premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year, and played at a few other festivals including Camden, Calgary, Palm Springs, and AFI Fest. It focuses on the ethics and responsibility inherent in documentary filmmaking. It examines well-known documentaries of the past decade and reveals the impact their commercial success has had on the lives of the onscreen subjects. Specifically focusing on the people seen in these famous docs: Staircase, Hoop Dreams, The Wolfpack, Capturing the Friedmans, and The Square. This is a compelling concept to explore, especially because this kind of exposure in a film really can be detrimental. Returning to theaters!! Sony Classics has revealed a new official trailer for the 4K restoration re-release of the incredible martial arts classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The beloved film won a total of four Oscars, including Best Cinematography and Best Score, originally premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival 13 years ago, and was a box office smash when it initially opened in early 2001. It's one of the best martial arts films ever made, featuring fight choreography from master Yuen Wo Ping. It's finally getting a proper re-release in theaters in February 2023, perhaps connected to the potential for actress Michelle Yeoh to win the Oscar this year. A young Chinese warrior steals a sword from a famed swordsman and then escapes into a world of romantic adventure with a mysterious man in the frontier of the nation. The cast also includes Chow Yun Fat, Zhang Ziyi, Chang Chen, Sihung Lung, and Cheng Pei-Pei. I still remember the first time I ever saw it in the cinema and was blown away. What should have been a young man's emotional journey to find his missing brother turns into a nightmare when he gets embroiled in a monster cats' revenge massacre against evil humans who abused them. Wait, this has monster cats in it?! The indie film stars Sho Mineo, Yuya Matsuura, Ayane, So Yamanaka, and Michael Aaron Stone. Unfortunately there's no shots of any cats in this trailer, but there's plenty of other kick ass glimpses in this upbeat, energetic 30 second tease. It looks amazing so far! "Now you may think you know the story, but there's one more layer of this bloomin' onion left to peel back." Peacock has revealed another trailer for their mystery-of-the-week series Poker Face, streaming later this month. This is labeled as a "TCA Exclusive Look" that adds even more footage on top of the other full-length trailer from last month. Glass Onion director Rian Johnson made this with co-writer Charlie Peppers and Natasha Lyonne after filming his last movie. The series follows Lyonne's Charlie, who has an "extraordinary ability" to determine when someone is lying - a "human lie detector," as she is known. After watching over 400 films throughout 2022 (always logging everything on my Letterboxd) it's time to share my final selection of My Top 10 Favorite Films of 2022. I try to watch as much as I can and give myself time to catch up with any extra films at the end of the year, but my favorites can come from anytime in 2022. The one that stuck with me all the way through the year was Everything Everywhere All at Once - I really believe it's an all-timer, on the same level as The Matrix in terms of its technical innovation and dynamic storytelling. I went to see it four times in theaters and I knew that nothing would knock it off the top spot. A few of my other faves are from the many film festivals I attend all year. Everyone who loves animation as much as we do knows that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a certified masterpiece. It also had a huge impact on the animation industry. This video essay created by Vox spends a few minutes examining the impact Into the Spider-Verse had, by showing how the look of it forced animation to evolve. Ever since Toy Story in 1995, most 3D animated CG movies are designed to be photo-realistic and have the glossy look & feel of most Pixar movies. They call this the "Pixar Look" and most of the animation industry has been using this for the last 25 years. That changed big time with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, made by Sony Pictures Animation. This video is a bit simplistic, ignoring animation made outside of the studio system, and forgetting about The Bad Guys entirely (which also uses a clever cel-shading style), but it's a good intro for those trying to catch up with what's going on. "Being a Mandalorian's not just learning about how to fight, you also have to know how to navigate the galaxy. That way you'll never be lost." Disney has revealed the first trailer for Season 3 of the hit show The Mandalorian, finally returning to the screen after nearly three years. The last season of Mando aired back in late 2020, and so much has happened since then! There's been a number of other Star Wars series to fill the gap (watch Andor if you haven't seen it yet) along with many more changes around the world. Creator Jon Favreau wrote all eight episodes of this new season, working with Noah Kloor on the third and Dave Filoni on the fourth and seventh episodes. "The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together."
