"Federova's plan is bigger than the banks." NBC has unveiled an official trailer for The Endgame, a new heist thriller series from creators Jake Coburn and Nicholas Wootton. We're breaking our usual no-TV rules to feature this because so many series are being made for streaming these days, and because this is directed by a major movie director - Justin Lin, of Better Luck Tomorrow, Tokyo Drift, Star Trek Beyond, and F9: The Fast Saga most recently. Endgame is high-stakes thriller about Elena Federova, a very recently captured international arms dealer and brilliant criminal mastermind who even in captivity orchestrates a number of coordinated bank heists, and Val Turner, the principled, relentless and socially outcast FBI agent who will stop at nothing to foil her ambitious plan. Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bathé star as Elena & Val, with Costa Ronin, Kelly AuCoin, Noah Bean, Jordan Johnson-Hinds, Kamal Angelo Bolden, and Mark D. Espinoza. "Do not come looking, do not worry about me, I will having the time of my life." An early festival teaser trailer has debuted for an indie "coming-of-age horror" film set to premiere this week - playing at the 2022 Slamdance Film Festival (the smaller Sundance spin-off). The film is called Honeycomb and it was filmed on Cortes Island, British Columbia in Canada. Five girls stray from society on the hunt for something more special... you can find them if you follow the sound. "A beautiful and raw love letter to youth, Honeycomb is a bold and promising feature debut for Fast, who shares writing credit with Emmett Roiko." The film stars a breakout cast of young talent including Rowan Wales, Sophie Bawks-Smith, Jillian Frank, Destini Stewart, and Mari Geraghty. Yo ho, a criminal's life for me. Maybe doing something illegal might actually be better than working a "real" job? There's clever commentary worked into this new film about the inherent problems with capitalism and corporate culture, ultimately hinting that the quickest and easiest way to earn money might actually be the best way. Which is why so many people choose this path instead of a formal career. Emily the Criminal is a slick, engaging credit card scam heist thriller starring Aubrey Plaza - who also produced the film. This is one of the final premieres at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and it's a late fest highlight, one of my faves. It remains hyper focused and never wanders, with a 96 minute runtime that is just right for this story. "If anybody's listening, please say something." Mill House Motion Pictures has released a festival teaser trailer for the indie contained sci-fi thriller film The Abandon, made by filmmaker Jason Satterlund. This will be premiering at the upcoming 2022 Mammoth Film Festival in just a few weeks, playing as the Closing Night film. It seems to be a combination of two other sci-fi films - Source Code and Cube. A wounded soldier awakens in a strange cube that tests his physical and mental limits as he attempts to find a way to escape against a ticking clock. The cube room begins to change: fluctuating extreme temperatures, random shifts of gravity, and strange writing appearing on the walls. Starring Jonathan Rosenthal, with Tamara Perry as the voice of the woman on the phone. From this teaser my guess is he's in some sort of coma or machine to keep him alive, kind of like Source Code. One day you will wake up. And you won't recognize where you are. You will need to find your way back. But can you? This entrancing short film is called Wake and it follows a man's experience of the aftermath of losing his wife and soon-to-be daughter. This touching short is made by filmmaker Martin Klapperbein and writer / cinematographer Liam Higgins. It's gorgeously shot and heartfelt and moving. Starring Michael Wamara as the man who wakes up. Sometimes it's better not to explain and over-analyze short films, and to just let them wash over you, and let them affect you any way they might. This is one of those shorts that I want to recommend, but I don't want to say anything else about it before. It's best to just dive in and spend a mesmerizing 7 minutes with this artistic creation. "As fresh, playful, and enigmatic as ever." BFI has released a brand new trailer for the 60th anniversary re-release of François Truffaut's iconic classic Jules et Jim. The film originally opened in France on January 23rd, 1962 - exactly 60 years ago this week. It's getting a full theatrical re-release in the UK in February. No US plan has been set yet. François Truffaut's hugely popular New Wave classic sees Jeanne Moreau at her most ebullient as Catherine, a Parisian beauty caught up in a complex ménage à trois with the two friends of the title – one Austrian, the other French – just before the First World War. "What we're seeing is this escalation." We're now in the era of cyberwarfare. Neon has revealed an official trailer for the documentary short Terror Contagion, a 25-min film made by Oscar-winning doc filmmaker Laura Poitras (Citizenfour, Risk). The film premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last year, and is being considered for Best Documentary Short at the upcoming Oscars this year. Terror Contagion is a visual study of the investigation by Forensic Architecture into the Israeli cyberweapons manufacturer NSO Group and the use of its "Pegasus" malware to target journalists and human rights defenders worldwide. You may have heard about this software, as it has been found on the phones of many of the most high profile people in the world, and is being used by nefarious agencies to achieve their goals of dominance and control. Am I OK? is a new buddy comedy made by actors / lovers / partners Stephanie Allynne & Tig Notaro, both making their feature directorial debut. In addition to making a film about friendship and how important that is, this film is meant as a guide for young women who are struggling to come to grips with a realization that they might be lesbian or bisexual or queer or whatever. The film is about a woman who, at age 32, realizes she has never dealt with the feelings deep inside her telling her she might not be straight. But instead of encountering hate or other trouble, Notaro & Allynne made a film that offers support and understanding. "Pinocchio is not just a puppet, he's a miracle!" Lionsgate has unveiled an official US trailer for an 3D CG animated movie called Pinocchio: A True Story, originally made in Russia by a Russian filmmaker. This is not the same as the upcoming Guillermo del Toro stop-motion animated Pinocchio movie that was also teased this week. It's the third new Pinocchio movie in the last few years, along with the Italian live-action version recently. This release will be available with an English-language voice cast, featuring Pauly Shore, Jon Heder, and Tom Kenny (of "SpongeBob" fame). Young Pinocchio runs away from his genius creator Jepetto accompanied by the horse Tibalt to see the world and joins the traveling circus run by the hustler Modjafocco. "You need to find your tribe." Picturehouse has unveiled an official UK trailer for True Things, an indie drama that first premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival last fall. It also played at the Toronto, London, and Stockholm Film Festivals last year. The film follows a young woman living on the fringes of society who becomes intoxicated by a stranger who overwhelms her quiet life. She lives in a small town on the water in the UK, and is lonely and just wants to meet a nice man. But she ends up falling for a complete asshole, and the film is supposed to be a lesson in how this can happen and how women need to watch out. But it's just painful. Ruth Wilson stars with Tom Burke, Hayley Squires, Elizabeth Rider, Frank McCusker, and Ann Firbank. I saw this in Venice and did not like it much. But that's just my own take. "You will all pay for the sins made by our elders." LD Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for the film The Cursed, which is the new titled for the horror thriller called Eight for Silver. This premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival under the Eight for Silver titled, received mixed reviews with some bits of praise. In rural 19th-century France, a mysterious, possibly supernatural menace threatens a small village. John McBride, a pathologist, comes to town to investigate -- and exorcise some of his own demons in the process. This is a werewolf film, which isn't so much of a spoiler, because it's a "reimagining" meaning the mythology is not what you're expecting. You'll have to watch to find out what that means! "This rig is leaking gas! We have to get out of here!" Magnolia Pictures has unveiled an official US trailer for the Norwegian disaster movie The Burning Sea, the latest in Norway's disaster series. An oil platform dramatically goes down on the Norwegian coast, and researchers try to find out what happened when they realize this is just the start of something even more serious - an environmental apocalypse. The Burning Sea is the latest disaster epic from the team behind The Quake and The Wave. As rigs are evacuated, submarine operator Sofia's companion Stian becomes trapped in the depths of the sea, and Sofia must dive in to rescue him. The movie stars Kristine Kujath Thorp, Henrik Bjelland, and Rolf Kristian Larsen. This looks crazy! And I'm glad the Norwegians keep making epic movies like this. "That old man said... you died fifty years ago." Yellow Veil Pictures has released an official trailer for The Long Walk, a slow born indie sci-fi horror film from the country of Laos (see Google Maps). This initially premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival playing in the "Venice Days" sidebar, and it also played at TIFF and Fantastic Fest and the Sitges Film Festival a few years ago. Made by a Laotian filmmaker named Mattie Do, this film has earned some rave reviews. She is the first and only woman filmmaker from Laos, and the only filmmaker of the country to work in the horror and fantastic genres. An old Laotian hermit discovers the ghost of a road accident victim can transport him back in time 50 years to the moment of his mother's painful death. Starring Yannawoutthi Chanthalungsy, Vilouna Phetmany, Por Silatsa, Noutnapha Soydara, Chanthamone Inoudome, and Vithaya Sombath. "Think like you're lost in the forest." Greenwich Entertainment has revealed an official US trailer for the documentary film titled simply Mau, the feature-length documentary about design visionary Bruce Mau. This originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last year, and it also stopped by CPH:DOX and Hot Docs. Filmed over a period of approximately three years and directed by Benji and Jono Bergmann, the documentary looks back at Mau's life to date and his career. It tells the story of his humble beginnings in Canada to his sharp rise to fame in the design space. "From working with the greatest living architects (Rem Koolhaas & Frank Gehry) on books and museums to rebranding nations such as Guatemala and Denmark. Bruce Mau is a pioneer of transformation design and the belief that design can be used to create positive change in our world." I want to see this just to hear all the crazy stories about him. "I'm still plenty angry, you understand, but the difference is that I am now able to strike back." Super LTD has revealed the first teaser trailer for this film known as Ted K, from filmmaker Tony Stone. This already premiered last year at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, and it played at Camerimage and the Stockholm Film Festival. Sharlto Copley stars as the infamous madman. The film is an exploration of Ted Kaczynksi's life in Lincoln, Montana in the years leading up to his arrest as The Unabomber. Based on Kaczynski's diaries and writings, the film is a kaleidoscopic true crime journey into the life of one of America's most complex and eccentric killers. It features a tour-de-force performance by Copley who portrays the complexity of this unique outsider, raging at the forces of both the inescapable technological society that plagues him and his own inner demons. "You have no idea who you partnered with." Tell that to the video game studio... Sony Pictures has revealed another new official trailer, the third one so far, for the Uncharted movie. It's based on the popular video game series about an adventurer named Nathan Drake, and it looks as bad as every other video game movie before it. Tom Holland stars as Drake, who goes on his first treasure hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Victor "Sully" Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg. The main cast also includes Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas. We've posted two other full trailers for this already, but none of them are looking any better. Maybe it will be so bad that it's actually fun? "What can anyone tell me about our friend in the tollbooth?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed an official US trailer for the film Tollbooth, formerly known as The Toll, a dark comedy thriller from Wales about a lone toll-booth operator with a past that is fast catching up with him. This premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival and is arriving on VOD in March in the US. Brendan works solo shifts in the quietest toll booth in Wales, hiding from a criminal past where nobody would ever look. When he finally gets rumbled, word of his whereabouts gets out and his enemies head west to find him for revenge. Meanwhile, local traffic cop Catrin's investigation into a simple robbery finds her heading over to the booth at exactly the wrong time... Starring Michael Smiley, with Annes Elwy, Iwan Rheon, Gary Beadle, Steve Oram, Evelyn Mok, and Darren Evans. This heartwarming, inspiring film is about a family that learns to connect with their autistic son through a radical treatment program. Withdrawn and constantly wrapping himself in fabric and blankets, Kyle was retreating from the world around him when he was very young and his parents weren't sure how to help. Twenty years later, the entire family looks back at Kyle's journey with candor and humor. "I'm going to count to three... and you'll go back to the past." Scream Factory has released an official trailer for On The 3rd Day, an Argentinian horror fantasy thriller launching on VOD / DVD this March in the US. It played at last year's Fantasia Film Festival and opened in Argentina earlier that year. While on a trip with her young son, Cecilia has a car accident. Three days later, she finds herself wandering a lonely road with no sign of her child—and no memory of what happened since the crash. Cecilia's desperate search for her son leads her on a tumultuous journey to face off against a religious fanatic who holds the shocking key to it all. The film stars Mariana Anghileri as Cecilia, along with Arturo Bonín, Diego Cremonesi, Lautaro Delgado, Mathias Domizi, & Nicolás Galvagno. This certainly looks creepy and strange. How did they make that? Netflix has debuted a fascinating new behind-the-scenes documentary film for The Power of the Dog. The featurette is under 20 minutes and spends time on set and in post-production with filmmaker Jane Campion. The video is titled Behind The Scenes with Jane Campion and can be watched on Netflix for free along with the film. This is part of Netflix's push for The Power of the Dog during the Awards Season, with hopes it'll get more than a few Oscar nominations. It's pretty much a DVD Special Feature available on streaming. "A rare glimpse into the creative process of Academy Award winning writer, director and producer Jane Campion as she shares her memories of the making of The Power of the Dog." Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the film with Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll, and Adam Beach. This is one of the best films of the year and it's so carefully crafted. The cinematography by DP Ari Wegner is stunning, and we should be talking more about her work, too. There are two excellent films from Finland playing at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival this year. Both are great discoveries at the fest – and both deserve to be talked about, too. The first one is a portrait of Finnish youth called Girl Picture, though the original Finnish title is much better - Tytöt Tytöt Tytöt which just translates to Girls Girls Girls (watch the trailer). The second one is a freaky little horror comedy film called Hatching, also known as Pahanhautoja in Finnish (watch the trailer), about a girl who finds a strange egg that becomes big and hatches something evil. Both of them feature similar themes of perfectionism, growing up, what it's like to be a girl in Finland, and how hard it is to deal with parents. But they're very different films and I'm delighted to report that each one is enjoyable and worth watching.
