Final Fantasy VII's "On the Way to a Smile" short stories collection to be published in the West

Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile is coming to the West with an official publication thanks to the efforts by the people at Yen Press.
FFVII: On the Way to a Smile is a collection of short stories written by Kazushige Nomura that bridges the gap between Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. The series had began with a short episodic story, titled “Case of Denzel”, being released on the official Japanese website for Advent Children, which inspired an OVA anime of a similar title: “On the Way to a Smile: Episode Denzel.” Following the OVA’s release, “Case of Tifa” was released in an issue of V-Jump.
These short stories had really only been available in Japan officially, with America and Europe receiving the short story “Case of Barret” with the release of the limited edition box set of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. However, with the announcement made at Anime NYC by Yen Press, fans in the West will soon have the entire collection together in one book.
Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile will feature all the previously mentioned stories as well as the additions of “Case of Yuffie,” “Case of Shinra,” “Case of Nanaki” and “Case of the Lifestream.”
The release date or price for the novel has not yet been announced.

Director of Final Fantasy XV says his new project should start gearing up in 2018

In a recent interview, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata talked briefly about his upcoming plans for 2018 for both FFXV and his new project.
“We’re planning something many fans have requested, and something you really wouldn’t be able to guess.” Tabata said when asked about future DLC for Final Fantasy XV. “We’re currently in the stage of solidifying the content of each one, while also reconstructing our development system. Rather than develop in a rush to put out several things in the year like we did this year, I think it is better for us to narrow down the content and develop more thoroughly than we have before.”
When asked about his new project, Tabata had said: “The plan is for the new project to shift into gear starting next year. I would also like to try to further expand what I worked on with Final Fantasy XV.”
According to an article published by Siliconera, Tabata mentioned in a previous interview that he would like to give players a Zelda: Breath of the Wild type experience with his next project, but has not discussed the topic since then.
Hopefully we will hear more about Tabata’s new project sometime in 2018.

Shinji Hashimoto says 2018 will be a big year for Final Fantasy with new titles in development

It’s the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy and we’ve experienced some of its celebration with the releases of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, and more spinoffs. In an exclusive interview with EDAMAME Arcade Channel, Final Fantasy brand manager Shinji Hashimoto has teased that the celebration will extend in 2018, with Square Enix teams working hard on new Final Fantasy titles.
The interview mainly focuses on the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game’s current performance, and he talks a bit about the series’ future plans at the end of the video.
Square Enix has definitely teased about gearing up with big preparations for E3 2018 in their recent financial report with major titles slated for announcement, and now we’re certain some of these could be new Final Fantasy games. Maybe it’s fair to start crossing fingers for the reveal of the next mainline number or big spinoff now.
Square Enix plans to announce major titles from the end of 2017 until E3 2018

Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda: "Final Fantasy is not something we could ever discontinue"

Final Fantasy is one of Square Enix’s most important franchises, but in a recent Gameindustry.biz interview with Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda, is a franchise that’s exerted great pressure on everyone attached. That may not come as a shock to many when considering the challenges that come with inheriting a title with such a voluminous history and expectation. While there have been stumbles, such as the original failed launch of Final Fantasy XIV, Matsuda says that the series is “not something we could ever discontinue.”
He continues:
“Each time, it’s a challenge for us to decide what kind of team to put on Final Fantasy. The developers always work under a lot of pressure. Innovation is the key. Of course the motif is consistent, but we need to always challenge ourselves, to do something that surpasses the previous installment or to provide something different to what we’ve had before. I think we were able to maintain that tradition with both XIV and XV, and I see that as an achievement.”
Both Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XV had considerable challenges facing their development but were ultimately met with commercial and critical favor. Final Fantasy XIV, as an MMORPG, has released two expansions after its initial 2013 re-release, with timely content patches that continually deliver more content to players hungry for more. It’s a game that director and producer Naoki Yoshida hopes will last at least ten years. It may be hard to believe but the half-way mark next year is nearly upon us, and the game doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.
Final Fantasy XV in it’s own way is extending itself beyond its original release date with scenario DLC, a multi-player expansion, and more to come in the following year, but it also includes an expansive trans-media campaign that saw release of the Kingsglaive movie, Brotherhood anime, and a slew of tangentially-related mobile titles. While it’s very much a single-player title, the development has tried to treat it very much like a game that operates as a service, adding in patches that fix bugs and add new features. Will other games get this treatment? Matsuda thinks it’ll have to be on a case-by-case basis.
Square Enix has been doing this with Final Fantasy in different ways in the last decade, for better or worse. See: the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII or what became of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos.
Matsuda: “At the end of the day, we are rooted in the games industry. Having solid games is at the basis of everything we do, and that’s not going to change.”
These days, it’s hard not to stumble into conversation about what’s next for series, especially with a recent comment from series brand manager Shinji Hashimoto that 2018 will be a big year for Final Fantasy announcements. What shape will the next numbered title take? Who will be working on it?
If Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XV, and the general industry tradewinds are any indication, it’ll likely be a title that lives well past its original release date. Maybe the important question may not be “will Final Fantasy XVI be a thing” or “what director will be installed” but rather “will Final Fantasy XVI be more than one thing?” What methods will it employ to deliver more of itself to its audience? Should we expect micro-transactions? Episodic DLC? A new trilogy?
You can check out the full interview over at GameIndustry.biz.

Final Fantasy XV's entire main party will be playable soon in the main game, Episode Ardyn announced

During the Active Time Report broadcast for Final Fantasy XV, Director Hajime Tabata and Marketing Manager Akio Otsuka provided more information on the future of the game.
Final Fantasy XV Comrades will be receiving a new patch on December 12. Patch 1.1.0 will be dedicated to fixing bugs in this multiplayer expansion, such as the inability to level up in some cases, problems with multiple quests, instances in which enemies don’t appear, issues that make progression impossible and more. New content that will be introduced through the patch will include Time Limited Quests which involves quickly matching players together to defeat waves of enemies within a certain time limit.
After this segment, Episode Ignis Director Takeshi Terada provided an update on the upcoming DLC which included a look at the opening scene of the DLC. Episode Ignis was mentioned to have twice as many story cutscenes as Episode Prompto and boasts multiple endings. The multiple endings will be additive to the ending of the main game, basically not necessarily affecting the actual ending. An Extra Battle feature has also been added, which features a special battle against Noctis.
Development Manager Daisuke Oe’s announced the “First Anniversary Update” for the main game. This update will allow players to swap between Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis seamlessly. Each character will play like in its DLC, and this update will come bundled in with December patch.
Other details regarding DLC content will be released near the end of the year once they are finalized. The next “Episode” the team is working on will be Episode Ardyn and will delve deeper into the background of the world. The team is also aware of the high volume of requests for similar content featuring Luna. As for now, three episodes are planned for 2018.
Additionally, Hajime Tabata announced that Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition for iOS and Android has been delayed from the Fall to the Winter.
