Amanda Nguyễn is a woman who was studying astrophysics at Harvard to pursue a career at NASA, where she had already interned twice, when she was raped at as frat party in 2013. She had to pay for her own rape kit, which was legally destroyed 6 months later without any protections for her. She put her dreams of becoming an astronaut on hold and instead started campaigning for the rights of rape victims. She drafted a bill to congress and got it unanimously passed in 2016, giving victims free rape kits and changing the law to keep evidence until at least the statute of limitations on rape. She also got a UN resolution on international cooperation on sexual assault passed, together with feminist activism group https://risenow.us/ .

For Amanda Nguyễn, this trip was her finally getting to go to space. It's just sad that sending a bunch of rich celebrities is distracting from this otherwise beautiful moment.
