Here's a bit of World War I trivia for you, did you know German Zeppelins would lower an Observation car, using a cable during bombing runs over England? With the Zeppelin safely hidden above the clouds, a "spy gondola or spy basket" would be lowered, sometimes several hundred meters (up to 3,300 feet), to a point below the cloud cover. The observer would aid with navigation and scout for targets to bomb, calling up to the Zeppelin using a field phone. They would then hoist the observation car back up and into the Zeppelin. What a ride!!
