Robert Stinnett is a Navy veteran of World War II who spent his life as a newspaper journalist and photographer. He argues that ample evidence was available to U.S. administration and military officials—through Japanese intercepts decoded and translated before the attack—to indicate that Japan was planning to attack Pearl Harbor. The Pearl Harbor commanders, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and General Walter C. Short, would not have been surprised if they had been properly informed. Washington, however, chose to keep them in the dark.

US anti-Japanese propaganda in World War II
The view of the Japanese as subhuman and treacherous eventually led to the justification for actions such as dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and fueled the movement to forcibly relocate Americans of Japanese heritage to internment camps through Executive Order 9066, issued on February 19, 1942. An estimated 112,000 to 120,000 Japanese immigrants and West Coast Americans of Japanese heritage were interned, regardless of their attitude toward the U.S. or Japan. They were detained during the war and, in many cases, returned home to find their property, farms, businesses, and other possessions sold or taken by the local, non-Japanese-American population.
Compare this to the German treatment of the Jews and one finds a world of a difference. Interned Jews had their possessions stored by the German government in order to be returned after the war should Germany have won the second world war.
