Comparison between Eve and Mary. Eve was the mother of all mankind, according to the flesh: Mary is the spiritual mother of all the faithful. Both entered life without the stain of sin, and in a state of grace; but Eve lost grace, while Mary, on the contrary, preserved it and increased it by corresponding with it. Eve thoughtlessly allowed herself to be deceived by the devil, without asking herself whether it were a good or an evil spirit who spoke through the serpent; but Mary pondered, and asked herself whether the salutation of the angel came from God or not. Eve conversed with the devil, for the ruin of man: Mary with Gabriel, for the salvation of man. Eve sinned by unbelief: while Mary believed the wonderful message which God sent. Eve sinned by pride, wishing to be as God: Mary was humble, calling herself the handmaid of the Lord. Eve was disobedient to God: Mary gave herself over entirely to His will. Eve consented to sin: Mary to God’s will. Eve, by her pride, degraded herself, and brought sin and death on all mankind: Mary, by her humility, was herself exalted, and through her Divine Son gave grace and life to the world. As far as she could, Mary paid the debt owed by Eve to the human race. Eve was the mother of the curse: Mary of the blessing. She is the true mother of the living, the new and better Eve. These striking contrasts are, of course, the result not of accident, but of the action of the mysterious wisdom and counsel of God, and they teach us to value God’s merciful Providence.

THE SUFFERING OF SOULS IN HELL IN THEIR MENTAL FACULTIES

1. The souls in hell will be tormented in their memory. Never, in the abode of infinite misery will they lose for a moment the remembrance of the time that was allowed them in this life to practise virtue, and to make amends for the evil which they have done; and never will it be concealed from them that there is no longer the least hope of remedy. They will call to mind the lights which they received from God, his many loving calls, his offers of pardon, all despised; and they will see that all is now at an end, and that nothing remains for them, but to suffer and to despair for all eternity. O Jesus! Thy blood, Thy sufferings, and Thy death are my trust and hope. Alas! suffer me not to fall into hell, there to curse forever even the blessings which Thou hast bestowed upon me.

2. The souls in hell will be tormented in their understanding, by thinking continually of heaven, which they have wilfully lost through their own fault. The immense felicity enjoyed by the blessed in the abode of delights will be forever before their eyes; and this will render their life of dreadful sufferings, which they must drag on forever in the prison of despair and woe, still more tormenting. Had I then died, my Redeemer, when I was in sin, I should now have had no hope of ever enjoying Thee in heaven! Thou gavest me life that I might gain heaven, and now have I lost heaven for something worse than nothing, by losing Thy grace! I love Thee, O God, and I am sorry for having offended Thee; and I hope, through the merits of Thy Passion, to come to love Thee forever in heaven.

3. The souls in hell will be tormented in their will, by being denied everything which they desire, and by having every punishment inflicted upon them which they do not desire. They will never have anything which they wish for, but everything which they abhor. They will long to rid themselves of their torments and to find peace; but there will be no peace for them; they will be forced to dwell in the midst of their torments forever. Their perverse will, by hating God when they know him to be the supreme good, and worthy of infinite love, will become their greatest torment. So it is, my God; Thou art an infinite good and worthy of infinite love, and I have exchanged Thee for nothing! Oh that I had died and had not offered Thee so grievous an injury! I love Thee, my sovereign good. Have pity on me and suffer me not to be again ungrateful to Thee! I renounce all the delights of this world, and embrace Thee as my only good. I will be forever Thine; be Thou forever mine. This is my hope, my God, my love, and my all. Deus meus et omnia. A CHILD WHO CHOSE CHRIST OVER SWEETS

Today is the death anniversary of the Servant of God Catharina Iwanaga Mori. She was a Japanese 5-year-old child who is being considered for beatification as a martyr. She was imprisoned during the time of Christian persecution in Japan. One day, a soldier offered to give her sweet cookies if she said she hated Christ. Though she was hungry, she replied, "Oh, no. Then I cannot go to heaven. There are much sweeter cookies in heaven."

Went to my first Latin mass yesterday. I personally did not care for it. TLM attendees - to my eyes - are similar to vegans, you don’t ask but they insist you know they attend TLM. It abounds with a “Holier than thou” attitude which I feel detracts from the sacrament.

We aren’t worthy of Christ. Only thing we are worthy of is eternity in hell. We do not deserve the sacraments, the little rituals to make it extra reverential seem to (imho) tacitly imply that we can every be worthy of God.

This is folly.

God makes all the effort, He comes to us by His own mercy and by His own love, not because we are worthy. You may receive the Eucharist on the tongue instead of in the hand, be that your preference, you may worry that it’s not sufficiently respectful of the sacrament to receive in the hand (I know monks who would disagree with that opinion, but that is by-the-by), but that implies your tongue which has spoken so many lies and vulgarities is suitable to receive Christ anymore than the hand which has so many times clenched in anger or drawn toward you some evil thing to enable your sin.

Do not submit to pride or stoop to those whose pride sneers at you. Receive God with humility, in whichever way enables you best.
