Urea is one of the most actively traded fertilizers in the world.

A large share of global demand is concentrated in a relatively small number of importing countries — shaping trade flows, freight routes, pricing, and overall market dynamics.

Understanding where demand is growing is just as important as understanding where supply originates.

🇷🇺 Russia’s Sulphur Market Under Pressure: Is Kazakhstan Set to Gain?

Russia’s sulphur market is becoming increasingly tight. The government has extended restrictions on exports of liquid, granular and lump sulphur until the end of 2026 to prioritize domestic fertilizer production.

At the same time:

📉 Technical gas sulphur production has declined.
⚠️ Supply disruptions at major production facilities continue to impact the market.
🏭 Domestic consumers, including fertilizer and metallurgical companies, are competing for limited sulphur volumes.

If these trends continue, Kazakhstan could strengthen its position as one of the key sulphur suppliers for global markets, especially for buyers seeking reliable long-term supply.

The sulphur market is entering a period of tighter availability and potentially higher price volatility. Market participants should closely monitor export policies, production levels, and logistics across the CIS.

🇰🇿 Kazakhstan Follows Russia with Sulphur Export Restrictions

Kazakhstan has introduced restrictions on sulphur exports to China, mirroring similar measures previously adopted by Russia. The move is expected to tighten regional sulphur supply and could impact fertilizer, chemicals, and mining industries that rely on Central Asian exports. (ICLG)

What this means for the market:
• Tighter sulphur availability for Chinese buyers
• Higher competition for alternative supply sources
• Potential upward pressure on regional sulphur prices
• Increased importance of suppliers from the Middle East and other exporting countries

With both Russia and Kazakhstan limiting shipments, market participants should closely monitor supply chains and pricing developments over the coming weeks.

Russia’s total foreign trade in goods and services is projected to approach $945 billion in 2026, around 10% higher than last year, according to analysts surveyed by the Russian central bank.

Key forecasts:
📦 Exports: $525 billion
📥 Imports: $420 billion
🌍 Total trade: ~$945 billion

Growth is expected to be supported by:
• Expansion of free trade agreements

🇷🇺🍅 Russia halves tomato imports from Türkiye, cucumber purchases drop to zero

Russia sharply reduced imports of Turkish vegetables in May 2026:

📉 Tomatoes: imports fell to $1.2 million, down 1.7x from April.

🥒 Cucumbers: no imports for the second consecutive month. The last shipments were recorded in March, totaling $418.6K.

The decline suggests Russian buyers are significantly scaling back purchases of Turkish vegetables, likely due to the start of the domestic harvest season and/or a shift toward alternative suppliers.

🇷🇺✈️🇯🇵 Russia May Resume Aviation Fuel Imports from Japan

According to Reuters, at least 200,000 barrels of jet fuel are expected to be shipped from Chiba, Japan, in the first half of July.

The cargo is reportedly set to travel first to South Korea, where it is expected to be transferred ship-to-ship near Yeosu before continuing to Russia. Several trading companies are said to be involved in the transaction, while the final Russian destination has not been disclosed.

If completed, this would mark one of the first known deliveries of Japanese-origin jet fuel to Russia since February 2022, when approximately 22,000 barrels were shipped from Yeosu to Vladivostok, according to Kpler vessel-tracking data.

🇰🇿⚓️ Kazakhstan resumes steel exports via Aktau Port after years of suspension

Kazakhstan has resumed shipments of rolled steel produced by Qarmet through the Port of Aktau as part of efforts to diversify export cargo and strengthen the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor).

📌 Key figures:
8,300 tons of steel already accumulated at the port
3,000 tons will be loaded onto the first vessel in the first half of July 2026
12,700 tons scheduled for shipment in July
• Around 50,000 tons planned for export by the end of 2026

Steel transshipment through Aktau previously reached 2 million tons per year between 2008 and 2012, before operations were suspended due to changing market conditions.

The restart signals growing utilization of the Middle Corridor and could mark the beginning of a broader recovery in Kazakhstan’s steel exports via the Caspian Sea.
