🚂 China–Russia rail container rates keep climbing — now reaching $7,500 per 40ft container, with analysts expecting $8,000 soon.

Strong import growth, container shortages, and geopolitical tensions are pushing logistics costs higher month after month.

Chinese imports to Russia are booming, while rail capacity remains limited — creating a serious imbalance in the market.

Like it or not, China is the world's superpower. In 2026 it is dominating with a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) of over 43 trillion, crushing the United States at 31 trillion, India at 19 trillion in third place, and Russia leading Europe at just 7.34 trillion in fourth. PPP gives a far more accurate picture of real economic strength and actual wealth than nominal GDP because it reflects what money can actually buy locally, while nominal GDP is flawed and often misleading as it ignores differences in local prices and cost of living.

🚛🤖 Autonomous trucks have officially entered international trade routes.

At the Eurasian Economic Forum, Russia announced the first successful cross-border commercial delivery by an autonomous truck carrying real cargo from Russia to Kazakhstan. So far, 101 autonomous trucks have already covered more than 14.5 million km on Russian roads without accidents.

For importers, this could mean faster deliveries, lower logistics costs, and more predictable supply chains — especially for Chinese goods moving through Kazakhstan into the Eurasian market.

The next step is creating unified Russia–Kazakhstan regulations for autonomous transport.

⚠️ Kazakhstan May Face a New Logistics Challenge

Russian Railways (RZD) has temporarily suspended the acceptance and transportation of Kazakh sulfur shipments to Russian ports and in transit through Russian territory. No timeline for lifting the restrictions has been announced yet.

At first glance, this may seem like a niche issue. However, sulfur has become one of Kazakhstan’s fastest-growing export commodities in recent years. In January 2026 alone, sulfur exports surged 4.6 times year-on-year, generating more than $136 million in export revenue.

The restriction could create significant pressure on export logistics, increase transportation costs, and force exporters to seek alternative routes.

📉 Russia’s Sulfur Production Declines: What It Means for Global Fertilizer Markets

Russia’s fertilizer sector is showing signs of strain. During the first four months of 2026, mineral fertilizer production fell by 0.4%, while sulfur output dropped sharply by 11.5% to 1.5 million tons. Ammonia production also declined, adding further pressure to the fertilizer supply chain.

In response, the Russian government has extended temporary restrictions on exports of certain sulfur products until June 30, 2026.

🌍 Potential market impacts in H2 2026:
• Higher sulfur and sulfuric acid prices;
• Rising production costs for phosphate fertilizers;
• Increased competition among importers for available supply;
• Greater reliance on alternative suppliers in the Middle East and Central Asia.

For fertilizer producers, traders, and importers, sulfur availability may become one of the key factors influencing prices and supply security.

5,000 Tons of Sulfur in 5 Months — and 4,000 Fake Sellers. The Market Is Flooded with Scammers.

The actual volume of sulfur imports through Alashankou from January to May 2026 was less than 5,000 tons. At the same time, more than 4,000 fraudulent companies are actively operating in the market.

Common schemes include:
• Fake invoices
• Forged certificates of origin
• Shell companies with no real operations
• Fabricated transaction histories

There is only one conclusion: never trust a supplier based on words alone. Every company should be verified through customs databases, trade records, and shipment history.

🌍🌾 El Niño is returning — and agricultural markets are already assessing the risks.

The probability of El Niño developing by Q4 2026 has reached 93%. Potential impacts include drought in Australia’s wheat regions, weaker monsoons in India, and risks to Brazil’s soybean crop.

India is the key market to watch. Weather agencies expect the 2026 monsoon at just 92% of the long-term average — one of the weakest forecasts in 26 years. With most of its 121 million tons of wheat consumed domestically, any production shortfall could quickly turn India into a major importer.

For Russian exporters, this could create new opportunities. Increased Indian demand for wheat and oilseeds may boost demand for Black Sea grain exports.

Russia’s Fuel Gap: Belarus and Kazakhstan Can’t Close It

Russia has reportedly lost around 700,000 barrels per day of refining capacity.

Belarus has sharply increased gasoline exports to Russia, but even at full capacity can replace only a small share of the missing volumes. Its refineries also rely largely on Russian crude.

Kazakhstan cannot provide significant fuel supplies due to export restrictions aimed at protecting domestic demand. Its main contribution is helping redirect crude oil flows and easing logistics pressure.

Key Takeaway

Both countries can provide limited support, but neither can offset a refining shortfall of this magnitude. The solution will need to come primarily from Russia’s own refining and logistics sector.

✈️ India May Buy Up to 200 Russian Aircraft

India is reportedly considering the purchase of up to 200 Russian-made regional aircraft, including the SJ-100 and Il-114-300, to improve connectivity between smaller cities and regional airports.

The discussions may also include technology transfer and local production under the Make in India program.

If approved, the deal could boost India’s regional aviation sector while reducing dependence on Western aircraft suppliers. However, certification, maintenance, and sanctions-related challenges remain key hurdles.

🌍 Where Does Kazakhstan’s Sulfur Go?

Kazakhstan produces around 4.5 million tonnes of sulfur annually, with only about 400,000 tonnes used domestically, mainly for sulfuric acid production.

➡️ Major producers include Tengizchevroil (TCO), Kashagan, and smaller producers such as CNPC-AMG, Zhaikmunai, and local refineries.

📊 Key figures:
▪️ 4.5 million tonnes of sulfur exported in 2025, worth $663 million
▪️ 56% of exports went to Morocco
▪️ Average export price reached $146/t in 2025
▪️ In Q1 2026, prices exceeded $250/t, surpassing $400/t by the end of March

🏆 Top three buyers accounted for 78% of Kazakhstan’s sulfur exports:
• OCP Nutricrops
• Trammo
• TotalEnergies Gas & Power Asia

With sulfur prices surging and fertilizer demand remaining strong, Kazakhstan continues to play a key role in the global sulfur market.

🇧🇷📈 Brazilian Soybean Exports to Russia Reach Annual High, But Remain Below Last Year

In May 2026, Brazil increased soybean exports to Russia to $26.1 million, doubling April’s figure and reaching the highest monthly level since May 2025. However, imports are still 1.9 times lower than the same month last year.

During the first five months of 2026, the value of Brazilian soybean shipments to Russia totaled nearly $51.5 million, down 31% compared to the same period in 2025.

Despite the monthly surge, Russia remains a relatively small destination for Brazilian soybeans. In May, Russia ranked only 18th among Brazil’s soybean buyers, while China remained the dominant importer with purchases worth $4.49 billion.

The top five destinations for Brazilian soybeans in May were:
🇨🇳 China
🇪🇸 Spain
🇹🇷 Turkey
🇳🇱 Netherlands
🇹🇭 Thailand
