SOLUTIONS TO Q5
On 24th September 2018, my brother Anand sadly passed away after years of enduring a very difficult and consuming illness.
Anand suffered from both anorexia and bulimia, as well as OCD and a contamination phobia. Dealing with all of these conditions at once was, I think, entirely overwhelming for him and ultimately, the magnitude of such illnesses proved too much for him to bear. Sarah Morse became involved with Anandβs care several years prior to his passing and during his last years, she proved an invaluable support and comfort to my brother.
I myself first met Sarah at one of the many care plan meetings that were held in order to determine the best course of action for helping Anand. The most recent meeting that I was invited to attend was in December 2017. This was a particularly difficult meeting for me to attend alone, as the idea of Anandβs βend stageβ anorexia and palliative care had to be discussed, in light of his rapidly deteriorating health. These discussions βalthough to be expected- were nonetheless hugely overwhelming for me, but having Sarah there to represent Anand gave me so much comfort, and her presence was so positive. It was so clear to me how deeply Sarah cared and wanted the best outcomes possible for Anand, that offered both dignity and the highest possible quality of life.
I believe that Sarah went above and beyond her role as carer for Anand, and she was dedicated to making his precious time left as comfortable, dignified and enjoyable as she could. She drove him to his favourite shops and helped him actively engage with the community that would otherwise have remained closed off to him completely (given his limited mobility), she sensitively helped with everyday tasks that Anand had often struggled to accept help for previously, and offered support, unwavering compassion and great company when he needed it. Because of this, I know Anand, despite all the pain and suffering he endured, experienced a genuine pleasure in her company, care and her friendship- and that is something my family and I will forever be grateful for.
