Seventh Schedule
* The seventh schedule under Article 246 of the constitution deals with the division of powers between the union and the states.
* It contains three lists- Union List, State List and Concurrent List.
* The union list details the subjects on which Parliament may make laws while the state list details those under the purview of state legislatures.
* The concurrent list on the other hand has subjects in which both Parliament and state legislatures have jurisdiction. However the Constitution provides federal supremacy to Parliament on concurrent list items in case of a conflict.

๐ฐ Features of Mauryan Administration ๐ฐ
๐๐ป There were five major political centres in the empire i.e., the capital Pataliputra and the provincial centres of Taxila, Ujjayini, Tosali and Suvamagiri.
๐๐ป The communication system existed along both land and riverine routes. It was very vital for the existence of the empire.
๐๐ป As the journeys from the centre to the provinces could have taken a long time, there was arrangement for provisions as well as protection for the travellers,
๐๐ป The Mauryans kept a large army. Magasthenes mentions a committee with six subcommittees for coordinating military activity which were as mentioned below :
โ One to look after the navy;
โ The second for management of transport and provisions;
โ The third was responsible for foot soldiers;
โ The fourth for horses;
โ The fifth for chariots;

Genetically modified crops (GM crops)
* Genetically modified crops (GM crops) are plants used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified using genetic engineering techniques. More than 10% of the worldโs croplands are planted with GM crops.
# Bt cotton remains the only GM crop allowed to be cultivated in India.
* Developed by US giant Bayer-Monsanto, it involves insertion of two genes viz โCry1Abโ and โCry2Bcโ from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis into cotton seeds. This modification codes the plant to produce protein toxic to Heliothis bollworm (pink bollworm) thus making it resistant to their attack.
* The commercial release of this hybrid was sanctioned by the government in 2002.
* In India, it is the responsibility of the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) under the Environment Ministry to assess the safety of a genetically modified plant, and decide whether it is fit for cultivation.
* The GEAC comprises experts and government representatives, and a decision it takes has to be approved by the Environment Minister before any crop is allowed for cultivation.
* Besides Bt cotton, the GEAC has cleared two other genetically modified crops โ brinjal and mustard โ but these have not received the consent of the Environment Minister.
