Thinking of winterdahlia. Not in the usual way of their flirting or banter and whatnot but in the most shittiest, horrid times of their lives. In the way where both of them were tortured so horribly and turned into killing machines, and it’s hard for the both of them to find people to even interact with or open up to. Bucky is 108 years old, he was in Cryo freeze multiple times, given super soldier serum, his arm was ripped out and replaced and he was psychologically tortured for YEARS and used as a killing machine. The only thing Hydra cared about was having the winter soldier in their grips. But what is he now? The so called best friend of Steve Rogers? A “healing” man who doesn’t want to be a killer anymore. Doesn’t want to be known as a killer and genuinely just wants a simple life that seems more like a pipe dream than anything.
And what about Quinn? Sold at 16 to Hydra, given multiple different versions of the super soldier serum and trained not just by Hydra but by someone from the Red Room to create the perfect “phantom”. The perfect killing machine. The perfect weapon known as their Black Dahlia. But what is she now? A woman so desperately trying to erase whatever there is of the organization to capture her. She’s never known a home, never known a bed or warmth or even how being held felt like.
So sometimes, when the two of them sit near each other on the kitchen counter of Bucky’s apartment that has a window looking to the streets of NYC and the wind blows just right in the dimly lit home, they probably don’t feel as scared or alone anymore. Maybe, just this once, Bucky can have someone who won’t leave him, and maybe just this once, Quinn could be held gently for once in her life.

Thanks to my wife for this analogy*
Everyone sees Bucky as the infamous white wolf. He’ll snarl at you, claw at you and attack you until he’s done with you but deep inside, he’s just a puppy. Not in the “cute” way or anything but in the way that he’s a kicked puppy who’s still so loyal, just waiting there to the side, hoping maybe this time, someone will pick me up and not leave me like the other times. And Quinn can see that.
Everyone sees Quinn as a stray cat. You try to feed her and she’ll hiss at you, run to a corner and hide but she still eats from your food. She’ll claw you and scratch you but she’s only doing it because of how she’s been treated. You can’t blame her. But deep inside, she’s a deer. A fawn, to be exact. A fawn that’s just lost, and yet a trigger is aimed at her forehead. Deep inside, she hopes you don’t shoot. She hopes you approach her maybe with open arms, and a warm place to sleep in. And Bucky can see that.
