“I don’t get why Iranians are so Islamophobic!”
Okay well when I was starting out school keep in mind I was 5 years old when we came back to Iran from Australia right? Yeah so if I wanted to go to school I obviously had to wear the uniform. Every single new school year I had to get up with my mother to go and get a fitted uniform of a long, ugly fucking coat-like top, long pants that scraped the ground when I walked because it had to be lower than my ankles, long socks were also required and at some point even down to the colour was also important. The hijab always went over my chest, and especially during the spring time when the weather got warmer my scalp itched immensely and it was so fucking hot but we couldn’t even change the fabric of the hijab so we were just left suffocating in the heat. It got even worse when our colour pallets changed to black after 6th grade.
We couldn’t wear much colour over our uniforms, and even when we had P.E in my school, we couldn’t wear the clothes underneath it because the colour would peek out and they ( the school) didn’t like that so we had to change during class which was always a pain. The reason they were so strict with colours is because they said “what if a male official walks into the school and sees you all? It’s lustful to wear these colours.”
We couldn’t grow our nails or paint them either, because the school automatically assumed everyone was going to pray (sometimes it was mandatory to pray, too) whenever our nails were long or we had nail polish (they’d check daily), they’d drag us to the corner of the yard and wipe our nail polish off, saying it’s a sin and we should know better because god doesn’t accept prayers from the colourful nails of a girl.
We had three different subjects relating to religion one way or another, whether it was Quran, Islamic studies or Arabic. It all served the purpose to feed Islam into our brains. When we complained on why we have to learn Arabic when we’re Iranians, we speak the Persian language, they would scoff and say “how dare you? Arabic is the language of the Quran and god!” As if “god” had a race or language barrier.
A cleric would come to our school during whatever fucked up special day they had and everyone had to rush and fix their hijabs and bring the top way down to even our eyebrows lmao. Then the cleric would talk about the value of Islam and some other fucked up bullshit he expected all of us to believe, especially after they killed Mahsa Jina Amini.
Oh I almost forgot. When I was going to sign up to a new school in 7th grade, I went with my hair out and a t-shirt and the woman looked at me and said “are you sure your daughter is going to 7th grade?” My mom asked yes and why that’s even a question? The lady said “well, where is her hijab?” Like I was a product of Islam and if I didn’t have a hijab I was worth nothing. If my arms showed then I’d be damned to hell.
Whenever I went to a more conservative town my grandparents lived in, my grandma would beg my mother to at least make me wear a scarf when I went outside because if I didn’t then it would be a “shame” to the whole family. My mother never agreed.
Not to mention waking up in the mornings to the sound of the Azzan knowing they executed yet another poor soul who just wanted their rights. Not to mention the hours upon hours I spent watching the news of my people getting shot in the streets for wanting basic rights. For when summer came around and we didn’t have any electricity or water, the government officials would make banners in the streets saying “The people of Gaza are going through a water crisis!” As if our own country wasn’t deprived of water. Then they’d say we have to “experience” how it’s like for the children and people of Gaza who don’t have water or electricity, as if that was justified.
And when they’d kill our youth, they’d mock them. They’d say “we did them a favour, and they’re in hell now.” After they killed a 3 year old, or a 5 year old. As if they have committed atrocities beyond words.

They dragged us by our hair and said a woman has no right to show even a strand because men will think it’s an “invitation”. No long nails. No makeup. Not even trimming your fucking eyebrows or mustache hair because it’s all “lustful”. Don’t touch a non-mehrem. How do you act with your own father? Your own brother? They’d think it’s an invitation too! - all again. And again. And again. Every. Single. Fucking. Day.
