Dear Love, (and lovers out there)

Sometimes we don’t just prepare for an exam. We prepare for approval. A version that old classmates would suddenly “respect.” And Love, I dragged you into that hunger. Because when you’re an aspirant, you’re constantly starving for one thing: validation. Marks don’t come daily.

And guess what gives quick proof? Attention. Messages. Someone saying “I believe in you.” Someone reacting to your story. Someone laughing at your jokes. It feels like water in a desert. And that’s when love becomes dangerous. Not because love is bad, but because thirst makes you drink anything.

Some of us study to become impressive. I’ve seen aspirants who don’t want the job, They don’t want responsibility, they want revenge on the world that doubted them. And in that revenge story, love becomes a prop. “Once I clear UPSC, she’ll regret.” “Once I clear, he’ll come back.” “Once I clear, my ex will see my value.”

Love, do you know what’s funniest? We act like warriors, but one seen message can ruin our day. You know why so many aspirants chase people during preparation: just for presence. To feel chosen in a phase where you feel invisible. Because let’s admit it: UPSC can make you feel like a ghost.

So when someone comes into your life and sees you, even a little, it feels like magic. It feels like, “Finally, someone gets me.” But Love, sometimes it’s not “someone gets me.” It’s “someone distracts me.” One bad mock? Text someone. One low day? Flirt. One lonely night? Talk till 3 AM and call it “connection.”

And then I’d wake up with two hangovers: sleep hangover, and guilt hangover. Because the exam doesn’t care about my feelings. The syllabus doesn’t pause because I had a heartbreak. Prelims doesn’t say, “Aww, poor baby, you were emotionally unavailable.”

So we become weird. We become half-lovers, half-students. We send good morning texts and then curse ourselves for wasting time. The real danger is this: UPSC makes you outsource your self-worth. And when admiration becomes oxygen, you start suffocating the moment it reduces.

That’s when you become needy. That’s when you overthink. That’s when you chase. That’s when you start reading meanings into “hmm.” And then you call it love. No. It’s hunger. Dear Love, here’s the philosophical truth I learned after years in this ecosystem:

Most of us are not looking for a person. We’re looking for a mirror that reflects the version of ourselves we want to believe in. And UPSC makes that hunger worse because you’re constantly living with uncertainty. You don’t know if you’ll clear. And uncertainty is painful. So we seek certainty in a person.

But that’s a risky strategy, Love.
Because people are not stable proof. People change. People leave. People get busy. People have their own battles. And if your worth is tied to their presence, you become a hostage. So what’s the way out? Don’t make permanent emotional decisions based on temporary emptiness. If you’re lonely, don’t treat the first available attention like destiny.

And if you’re craving love, remember: Sometimes you don’t need a relationship. You need sleep. You need sunlight. You need a schedule. You need real friends. That said, I’m not saying love and UPSC can’t coexist. But only if love is not used to fill a hole that self-respect was supposed to fill.

Two whole people. Not two half-people clinging in fear. Because when you’re truly aligned, you don’t chase like a beggar. And if love comes, beautiful. If it doesn’t, also fine. Because UPSC already teaches you one powerful thing: Not everything you want is meant to happen now. (Ouch but true). Just don’t confuse late-night loneliness with life’s plan. Now go, aspirant. Close the app. Open the book. Impress yourself!
