4th Block: Chornobyl

From April 14 to May 9 2026, during the opening hours of the Institute.
“4th Block: Chornobyl” is an international poster triennial founded in 1991 by Ukrainian graphic designer and Chornobyl liquidator Oleg Veklenko, together with his colleagues and other direct witnesses to the disaster. The project takes its name from Reactor No. 4 of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, which was destroyed in the April 1986 explosion.
Having himself taken part in the liquidation operations, Veklenko made this formative experience the ethical and creative foundation of the project. From the outset, 4th Block has conceived graphic design as both an artistic and civic space—a site of memory and a platform for expression. The posters address nuclear safety, environmental responsibility, alternative energy, as well as the human cost of technological failure.
The issues articulated in 1991 remain just as urgent today. The secrecy and militarization that surrounded the Chornobyl disaster do not belong solely to the past: they persist in Russia’s current attacks on Ukrainian nuclear infrastructure, widely described as forms of nuclear terrorism and environmental warfare. The exhibition thus underscores how imperial violence and ecological negligence are part of recurring historical patterns whose effects continue to unfold.
In 2019, the 4th Block Museum was established within the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts. It now brings together nearly 11,000 posters collected over more than thirty years, forming one of the most significant bodies of socially engaged graphic design in the world.
This 4th Block exhibition is presented by the Ukrainian Club of Montreal, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Montreal, with the aim of fostering a dialogue between memory, contemporary creation, and collective responsibility.
The exhibition posters are provided by the 4th Block Graphic Designers Association (Ukraine) and are part of the international poster project dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Adrian Ivakhiv for a discussion of his edited volume, Terra Invicta: Ukrainian Wartime Reimaginings for a Habitable Earth (2025).
The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 produced not only military and humanitarian responses but also scholarly and artistic ones from Ukrainians looking to the future of their country.
Terra Invicta is a series of critical and creative articulations of pasts, presents, and possible futures involving humans and the more-than-human world. The authors suggest that Ukraine is caught in an environmental war, waged by a fossil-fuel superpower against people who are prepared to lay down their lives to protect their land. This volume explores the relationship between Ukrainians – a multiethnic and multireligious people with a complicated history – and the Ukrainian land, the zemlia to which they belong. Themes include decoloniality, ecocultural identity, the politics of reconstruction, and artistic responsibility amid a war for national survival. Contributors emphasize the value of reviving multispecies relations with the land, positively transforming multicultural relations with history, and reinvigorating grassroots engagements with the state and society.
Terra Invicta grapples with the role of artistic expression in the face of war and collective loss and what it means to commit to a place, a land, a territory, in a world set in constant motion.
The book is available open access here.

Man Behind the Camera is an exclusive live cinematic concert by Ukrainian-Canadian composer and pianist Taras Luka , featuring an original score performed to Man with a Movie Camera (1929), the landmark Ukranian avant-garde film by Dziga Vertov. �
The film was produced in Ukraine by All-Ukrainian Photo Cinema Administration (VUFKU) and filmed in Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv , capturing the rhythm of modern city life through groundbreaking cinematic techniques. ��
In the Sight & Sound critics’ poll , it was ranked among the top ten greatest films of all time and later named the greatest documentary film ever made.
Created without actors, costumes, sets, or a traditional script, the film captures a single day in the life of a modern city . Vertov documents urban life through pure cinematic form, transforming everyday reality into a dynamic visual symphony through radical editing, rhythmic montage, and bold visual experimentation.
During the screening, Luka performs the score live on stage , transforming the film into a powerful immersive audiovisual experience where music and image unfold together in real time. ��
Taras Luka is an award-winning composer with an international career across Europe and North America, known for his work in theatre, film, and large-scale concert productions. His work “Choral of Freedom” world premiered at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Teatro Verdi (Italy) under conductor Oksana Lyniv as part of the international Concerto per la Pace initiative with the Italian Red Cross.Taras is the composer of major theatrical and musical productions, including Romeo & Juliet, Heart in Half, Buka, and In Captivity. His works have received national recognition in Ukraine
