The second edition of our radio program <Dual Mono> will take place on 4th Dec,

<Dual Mono> pairs one Berlin-based artist with another working elsewhere, inviting them to a public conversation around their work and relation to sound.

This edition features Martin Riches and Jakub Frank.

Martin Riches @martin_riches_artist (born 1942, Isle of Wight) has lived in Berlin since 1969. Originally trained in architecture, he has produced more than sixty kinetic sculptures and sound machines since the 1970s, including the Flute Playing Machine, Talking Machine, and Singing Machine. He designs and builds all components of his works and has collaborated with numerous composers and performers in Europe and Japan.

Jakub Frank is a curator and art historian based in Olomouc and Opava. He teaches at Palacký University and is the founding director of Kalliopi – Sommer Family Endowment for contemporary art. From 2019 to 2025, he curated modern, contemporary, and new media art at the Olomouc Museum of Art. He is active in Bludný kámen @bludny_kamen and has organized exhibitions and events focused on new media and sound art, as well as experimental music.

The conversation will be moderated by Andrejs Poikāns @andrejspoikaans11.

Liebe Freund*innen, Genoss*innen und Geschwister,
vorletzte Woche wurde ein taubes Mädchen in Bochum durch mehrere Schüsse der Polizei schwer verletzt. Es wurde mit einer Schusswaffe und einem Taser auf sie geschossen. Zuvor wurde sie von ihrer (staatlichen) Einrichtung gesucht. Die Polizei hatte das Mädchen in der Wohnung ihrer Familie angetroffen. Dort befanden sich auch die Mutter und der Bruder des Mädchens, beide ebenfalls taub. Beide verständigen sich auf serbischer Gebärdensprache. Sie wurden von der Polizei gewaltsam fixiert und mussten die Gewalt der Polizei an ihrer Tochter bzw. Schwester miterleben. Das Mädchen befindet sich nun im Krankenhaus, laut Anwalt kämpft sie nach wie vor um ihr Leben, ist aber ansprechbar.
Dieser Angriff ist ein Angriff auf uns alle, auf unsere behinderten und migrantischen Geschwister.
Auf diejenigen, die eine andere Sprache als die deutsche Lautsprache benutzen oder auf anderen Wegen kommunizieren. Der Angriff zeigt die Schnittstelle von Race, Gender und Ability klar auf. Wir möchten denjenigen, die von diesen Diskriminierungsformen profitieren, entschlossen entgegentreten. Wir wollen unseren Widerstand gegen einen Staat und seine Polizei ausdrücken, der solche grausamen Taten verübt.
Daher möchten wir eine Kundgebung am 15.12. um 17:30 Uhr an der neuen Polizeiwache am Kottbusser Tor abhalten.
Wir hoffen auf eure kämpferische Beteiligung und laden euch herzlich zu unserem Bündnistreffen am 6.12. um 13:00 Uhr in der Rigaer Str. 94 ein.

Replicant Reiko is robbed of her own biological data and dumped in E-Trashville—a huge landfill site for electronic waste. There, Reiko is reborn as ‘UKI the Virus’ to sabotage a biosystem developed by GENOM Corporation that aims to manipulate sexual desire through pharmaceuticals. Defective humanoids, transmutants, techno-data bodies, and an infected city merge with the UKI virus. UKI is a suspenseful digital collage that combines CGI animation generated using game engines with live-action sequences and visual effects to create a polysexual, gender fluid film of extraordinary visuality. With her ‘sci-fi viral alt-reality cinema,’ Shu Lea Cheang addresses capitalist-technological mechanisms of oppression, body norms, and queer resistance. The works Red Pill and Virus Becoming, shown in the exhibition, are also part of the multimedia cosmos of UKI.

This collaboration between thisquietarmy (Eric Quach) and otay:onii (Lane Shi) traces its origins to a European tour in Spring 2023, where both artists crossed paths as part of Hypnodrone Ensemble — a Berlin-based collective led by Quach and Aidan Baker. The duo recorded in the summer of 2023 in Montreal, further unleashing a hauntingly immersive album — fusing Quach's dense, atmospheric guitar drones with Shi’s visceral vocals and textural sensibilities, blurring the edges between drone, avant-garde noise, and experimental vocal performance. The result is a dialogue between ethereal dissonance and visceral emotion, a powerful convergence of post-industrial ambience and emotionally charged experimentation — capturing the tension, intimacy, and unpredictability of their performative chemistry.
