Government Responds as Support for Anti-Affordability Checks Petition Swells

The UK government remains committed to implementing financial risk checks in the gambling industry, despite a petition against the measure gaining momentum. The petition, which describes the checks as "inappropriate and discriminatory," argues that they could drive people towards the black market and negatively impact the horse racing sector.

The government, responding at the 10,000-signature mark, reaffirms its commitment to a proportionate and frictionless system of checks, emphasizing the Gambling Commission's plans to strike a balance between customer safety and industry health.

The checks will only affect those in the highest 3% of gambling losses, according to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports. The government aims to avoid over-regulation and ensure a healthy relationship with operators.

UKGC: Push-to-web methodology can help produce better gambling participation data

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is confident that the push-to-web methodology used in the Gambling Survey for Great Britain will provide "relevant and robust" data.

The latest findings reveal differences in gambling participation by age, with those aged 45 to 54 having the highest rate at 61.6%, while those 75 and over had the lowest at 39.6%. Motivations for gambling include monetary gain and enjoyment, with satisfaction levels generally positive.

The UKGC emphasizes that the push-to-web methodology is experimental, and while it is confident in its relevance and robustness, a new baseline must be established for tracking changes in gambling behavior. The updated survey is expected to go live in late 2024.
