EGBA is urging Italy to reconsider its strict ban on gambling advertising

They did it due to a report revealing that Italian players spend €25.00 billion annually on black market gambling websites.

These unlicensed sites account for 75% of Italy's black market bets, resulting in approximately €1.00 billion in lost gross gaming revenue. The lack of advertising for licensed operators may be a factor in this trend.

EGBA calls for a reevaluation of the rules to enhance consumer awareness and differentiate licensed websites from unregulated ones.

This situation coincides with challenges in Italy's national football team, where several players have been reported for breaching betting rules, highlighting the need for stronger regulation in Italy's gambling industry.

GB sees fall in online betting despite overall gains

Online gambling in Great Britain demonstrated a distinctive pattern in the latest data from the Gambling Commission. While total gross gambling yield (GGY) saw a slight 0.6% increase, reaching £1.2 billion for the three months ending on September 30, there was a notable decline in online real-event betting GGY, which fell by 5% to £428 million. This reduction coincided with a 1% decrease in total bets for this vertical, and active accounts also dipped by 0.2%.

In contrast, online slots exhibited a robust performance, with GGY surging by 8% to £589 million, accompanied by an 11% increase in the number of spins. The average monthly active accounts rose by an impressive 11% to 3.8 million per month. Additionally, there was a noteworthy 4% increase in the number of online slots sessions lasting over an hour, despite the average session length decreasing to 17 minutes. Approximately 7% of all sessions lasted more than one hour.

A particularly noteworthy trend emerged in self-service betting terminals (SSBT), which experienced significant growth during this period. The number of spins in July, August, and September recorded remarkable year-on-year increases of 15.5%, 16.3%, and 30%, respectively.

This data provides a nuanced perspective on the state of online gambling in Great Britain, highlighting both areas of decline and sectors that saw substantial growth during the specified timeframe.

Thailand gets closer to legalised gambling

Thailand may be on the brink of a major policy shift regarding gambling and casinos, a significant departure from its long-standing resistance to legalization. A proposal to establish a review committee to examine current policies passed without objections from Members of Parliament, indicating a potential change on the horizon.

Under the current legislation, land-based casinos are prohibited in Thailand, with betting limited to horse racing and government-sanctioned lotteries under the Gambling Act of 1935.

The newly formed 60-member committee will delve into existing policies and explore the potential of entertainment complexes with integrated casinos to boost the economy and tourism. They've proposed a 30% tax on licensed premises, potentially generating up to 100 billion baht (US$3 billion) annually. The new legislation would also open the door to sports betting, online gambling, and speculation on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

Potential locations for these complexes include central Thailand, the north, north-east, and southern regions. However, there has been some pushback from the travel and tourism industry, expressing concerns about corruption and limited operator access.

As Thailand seeks to rebuild its economy and define its tourism focus, this shift represents a significant move away from its previous stance, with possible implications for the country's future as a tourist destination. It follows last year's controversial relaxation of cannabis laws and recent announcements about extending opening hours for bars and clubs.

Kenya is Poised to Re-regulate its Gambling Industry

Kenya is poised to re-regulate its gambling industry pending parliamentary approval of the Gambling Control Bill 2023. The proposed legislation seeks to overhaul regulations, implement stricter oversight, and enhance player protection nationwide. A key component is the establishment of the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) to replace the current Betting, Control, and Licensing Board (BCLB), granting the GRA significant authority in licensing, renewals, suspensions, and revocations.

The bill introduces various measures, including prohibiting the registration of minors for online gaming, lotteries, or betting activities. It also advocates for restrictions on gambling advertisements on TV and radio, confining them to the hours between 6 am and 10 pm. To combat unlicensed operations, the bill proposes substantial penalties, with initial violations potentially resulting in fines of up to KES3m (€18,413) or a three-year prison term.

Taxation is addressed in the legislation, proposing a 15% tax on gross gambling revenue, along with a monthly gambling levy determined by Kenya's 47 counties. Notably, the bill specifies a minimum of 30% Kenyan citizen shareholding for licensed operations, a departure from the previous 49% requirement. The law also mandates transactions through Kenyan-registered banks and requires insurance security bonds for liabilities. A minimum stake of KES20 (€0.12) for online gambling is proposed to discourage lower-income individuals, with penalties for operators violating the minimum threshold.

The bill's introduction by National Assembly majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah suggests likely passage, although the exact timeline for parliamentary approval remains uncertain. Kenya's regulatory reforms coincide with a surge in online gambling activities, with KES88.5bn collectively wagered in the 12 months to June 2023.
