The EuFMD) and the FAO/WOAH PPR Global Eradication Programme Secretariat are holding an online peste des petits ruminants - Emergency preparedness and response webinar, on Wednesday, 11 September 2024 at 13:00 PM (CEST) .
The webinar should improve the knowledge and capacity for early detection and rapid response of contingency planners, veterinarians and animal health experts in the EuFMD Member Nations. The discussion will focus particularly on PPR recognition and diagnosis.

International Year of Camelids. #DYK: Camels have a unique relationship with FAST diseases.
They live in areas of the world where FAST diseases are frequently observed and are susceptible to FMD, PPR and RVF infections, and to a lesser extent to LSD.
Although clinical signs of FAST infections are less severe in camels than in other livestock species, and outbreaks are rarely reported, direct losses may have a long-lasting impact on communities relying on camels for milk, meat and transport.
Camels are core to the livelihoods, food security and nutrition of many communities in arid and semi-arid regions. As part of the livestock ecosystem, they provide a vital source of income and nutrition when FAST outbreaks devastate cattle or other livestock.
Camels rarely act as primary source of infection, and are not considered to be significant amplifiers of FAST pathogens.

The experience and lessons learnt from the current SPGP epi situation in Greece and Bulgaria, indicate that there is a risk of further spread of SPGP within the region, including areas that currently appear to be unaffected.
Early detection is crucial to prevent the disease from spreading widely after introduction.
Awareness and recognition of the disease and passive surveillance measures are of the greatest importance.
In addition, as SPGP is primarily spread by contact between infected and naive, strict biosecurity measures on farms and during transport are essential and significantly reduce the risk of SPGP introduction and spread.

As part of the
information-sharing platform on FAST diseases in North Africa, EuFMD organized this week, in collaboration with Anses, a workshop on early detection and control of
foot-and-mouth disease, in Hammamet, Tunisia. This workshop brought together focal points from the
REMESA sub-networks (REPIVET and RELABSA) from Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, and
Tunisia, members of the Group for Vaccination Advice, guidance and consultation (GVA) and representatives from the private sector (vaccine producers). The objective was to discuss the epidemiological situation in
the region, early detection of the virus, surveillance, information-sharing among countries of the region, the
role of national and reference laboratories, and vaccination. Many thanks to all participants for the very insightful discussions, as well as to the Tunisian veterinary services and to FAO Tunis and FAO SNE for their support in organizing this workshop.
