The EuFMD's new Move FAST strategy is centred on three Focus Objectives, seven priority Action Areas and eight principles. The four-year work programme builds upon capacity development, preparedness, networks, early warning systems and global surveillance. The overall aim is to reduce risk and consequence of FAST introduction into member nations and states.

We've embarked on a journey to establish a prequalification scheme for vaccines against FMD, enhancing vaccine security in the process. EuFMD's initiative involved evaluating FMD vaccines' compliance with the minimum standards outlined in the Manual of Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals by the WOAH. This is the first time that an independent system for prequalification has been developed for a veterinary vaccine. Learn more!

Lumpy Skin Disease in North Africa
The European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD) wishes to inform EuFMD Member Nations about the further spread of Lumpy skin Disease (LSD) in North Africa – the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Algeria recently informed farmers about outbreaks of LSD in that country. This follows on from official notification of LSD in Libya in late 2023 and follow-up exchanges with EuFMD during the risk information sharing platform meetings, where they have reported that outbreaks of the disease are continuing.
The occurrence of LSD in Algeria represents a major change in the epidemiological situation in the Maghreb region.
Surveillance to monitor the FAST situation in the region has shown that the introduction and spread are most probably associated with animal movement and delayed detection or recognition of the disease. More specifically:
Algeria - outbreaks are being reported in multiple locations throughout the country. In-country communications are aimed at raising awareness and informing farmers and consumers about the disease and disease control activities that are being implemented. Control measures include ongoing surveillance for detection of further cases; isolation of sick animals; quarantine, disinfection and vector control at affected premises; and closure of animal markets.
Tunisia - there is a very high risk of introduction of LSD considering the number of outbreaks that have occurred close to its borders and suspect cases are being investigated. Although LSD vaccines are not currently available in the country, the authorities are considering the use of vaccination.
Libya - outbreaks have continued to occur since the introduction and notification of LSD in the country in late 2023. Investigations undertaken to understand the source of introduction identified that there has been uncontrolled animal movement from a neighboring country. Libya is currently benefitting from FAO technical support, including the provision of 1.400.000 doses of LSD vaccine.
Considering the seasonal abundance of vectors, the increased movement of animals, the potential for illegal introduction of infected animals, and the large population of naïve animals in these countries, there is a significant risk of further spread of LSD within the region, including to areas that currently appear to be unaffected. In addition, a reduced availability of resources at national level and an inadequate supply of vaccine, heightens the risk for further spread within the region and the possibility of spread to neighboring regions of Europe.
Therefore, North African countries are advised to implement enhanced measures for early detection, diagnosis, and response whereas EuFMD Member Nations should take increased precautions to reduce the risk of introduction of LSD into Europe.
EuFMD is providing support as follows: (1) liaising with the veterinary services in the affected countries; (2) sharing recently developed materials included resources in the Emergency Toolbox via a social platform; (3) convening a meeting of epidemiological focal points from the affected countries and neighboring high-risk countries (“the regional platform for FAST disease risk information sharing”); (4) providing essential information to help decision-makers evaluate the severity of the situation and to assist veterinary services in identifying key measure for disease control and eradication.
