Global surface mass anomalies observed by the GRACE/GRACE-FO satellites (for the month of May 2025 relative to the 2005-2010 gravity field). Over land, red colors indicate below-average terrestrial water amounts, while blue colors show above-average water amounts (including ice, snow, soil moisture and groundwater). Over oceans, red colors indicate below-average ocean bottom pressure, while blue colors show above-average bottom pressure. Ocean bottom pressure changes are related to large-scale ocean current variations, as well as overall sea level changes from ocean mass changes. Credit: GES DISC

The May 2025 map of gravity anomalies has some notable features. The positive anomalies in the Congo and Amazon rainforest regions are due to the iconic “rainy season,” and this may also account for the positive anomaly in the Sahel region south of the Sahara Desert.  In May 2025, rainfall was higher than normal in the Congo River basin, but approximately normal in the Sahel and the Amazon basin.

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Elects 2026 Class of Fellows. TWAS elected 63 new Fellows, among them Professor #Asfawossen, in the area of Earth, Climate, and Environmental Sciences.
___
Asfawossen Asrat, Professor at Botswana International University of Science and Technology. The nominee’s research spans a wide spectrum of the Earth sciences, and his original research contributed to the understanding of mafic-felsic magma interactions during the construction of shallow level calc-alkaline plutons, and his original contributions are still widely cited. Asfawossen’s work evolved towards using stable isotopes in various archives and he pioneered high resolution speleothem paleoclimate research in eastern Africa, and he remains a leading expert in the field in Africa. Asfawossen has been leading and co-leading several successful lake drilling projects in Ethiopia during the last two decades which contributed to the understanding of the impact of climate variability on human evolution, expansion and innovation. Asfawossen is a leading expert in paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the Quaternary in eastern Africa. Member of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, African Academy of Sciences, and TWAS Young Affiliate (2012–2016), he has received Best Research Excellence Awards from Addis Ababa University, among others.

Akobo Minerals – Operational Update for January 2026
EBC on strategic and national security minerals.

What are they?
Strategic and national security minerals are those essential to a country’s economic stability, defense capabilities, and critical infrastructure, where any disruption in supply would pose serious risks to national interests.
They are often referred to as critical minerals, but the national security designation places greater emphasis on their military applications and geopolitical significance. This category includes a wide range of materials most notably rare earth elements (REEs) that are indispensable for advanced technologies, defense systems, and energy security.

End of ArcMap software
------
In Ethiopia, many professionals have used ArcMap for years. Since March 2, 2026, the software has been officially retired. Today, there are thousands of QGIS users, and I believe the future will increasingly shift toward open-source platforms rather than licensed ArcGIS Pro.

The retirement doesn’t immediately break your existing ArcMap workflows, but it signals that continued use is risky, unsupported, and not future-proof.
