Reporter newspaper: 2023

...numerous international and domestic mining companies have been vying for rights to develop the lucrative Kenticha deposit.

----
Wikipedia

The cornerstone of Ethiopia's lithium ambitions lies in the Kenticha pegmatite field.

----
The African dream

Ethiopia’s mineral-rich lands remain largely unexplored, especially when it comes to lithium. The Kenticha mine was once famous for tantalum mining. But now, geologists have discovered large lithium reserves in the same area.

----
Mining Business Africa : 2023

The first large-scale lithium mine in Ethiopia set for commissioning by Kenticha Mining PLC. The project is divided into three phases, focusing on different types of lithium: lithium concentrate, lithium carbonate, and lithium hydroxide. The company plans to produce all three types to cater to international markets.

Ethiopia possesses two distinct and promising lithium deposit types:

1. hard rock spodumene in pegmatites (currently in advanced exploration) and

2. lithium-rich brines in the Rift Valley lakes (a compelling but early-stage opportunity).
--------

The hard rock lithium potential is centered on spodumene-bearing pegmatites within the Neoproterozoic metamorphic belts of the south, particularly the Kenticha. While still in the exploration phase, the geological setting, known mineralogy, and initial drill results indicate a strong potential for the development of a commercial lithium mining industry.

----
Lithium brines
The presence of the East African Rift Valley with its saline lakes and geothermal systems creates a highly prospective geological environment for lithium brine deposits. But this resource is less explored compare to hard-rock deposit.
