One of the coolest things I learned this week was how Elasticsearch makes searching so fast.

I never really thought about what happens behind the scenes. I just assumed there was some magic involved

Turns out, the magic is something called an inverted index.

Instead of only storing data like this:

User 1 → React, Node
User 2 → Python, React

Elasticsearch also builds an index that looks like this:

React  → User 1, User 2
Node   → User 1
Python → User 2

So when you search for "React," it doesn't have to scan millions of user records. It can jump straight to the matching documents
