Diogenes of Sinope was an influential Greek philosopher and one of the central figures of Cynicism. Born around 404 BCE in Sinope, a city on the Black Sea coast of Anatolia, he became famous for his radical way of life and his rejection of conventional ideas about wealth, status, and respectability.

Diogenes believed people should live according to nature rather than society’s expectations. He valued simplicity, self-sufficiency, and virtue, arguing that material possessions and social status created unnecessary burdens. After being forced to leave Sinope over his involvement in debasing currency, he eventually settled in Athens, where he became associated with Antisthenes, a follower of Socrates. Rather than simply discussing his philosophy, Diogenes lived it through deliberately provocative actions that challenged accepted social norms. His famous use of a lantern to search for an “honest man” symbolized his belief that genuine virtue was rare.

Diogenes continued practicing his philosophy even after being captured by pirates and sold into slavery. In Corinth, he reportedly became a tutor to his master’s sons while continuing to promote Cynic principles. His famous encounter with Alexander the Great further demonstrated his contempt for power and status: when Alexander offered to grant him anything he wanted, Diogenes simply asked him to move because he was blocking the sunlight. His life and philosophy continue to influence those who question conventional ideas of success, wealth, and social approval.

The morning following 9/11, thousands of Iranians gathered in the streets of the capital Tehran to hold a candlelight vigil for the victims. According to eyewitnesses, the vigil lasted for several miles.

At Tehran's largest soccer stadium, a crowd of 60,000 people observed a minute of silence and recited prayers for those killed, before the start of Iran's World Cup qualification match.

On the same day, the Iranian President at the time, Mohammad Khatami, said the following: 'On behalf of the Iranian people and the Islamic Republic of Iran, I denounce this terrorist act, which led to the killing of defenseless people, and I express my deepest sorrow and sympathy with the American people.'

The Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also commented on the attack: 'Islam condemns the massacre of defenseless people, whether Muslim or Christian or others, anywhere and by any means. However, this act should not be used as a pretext to carry out any attack on Afghanistan, which will lead to another human tragedy.'
