The essence lies in this: improvisation demands that, over the course of 2–4 minutes, one holds various categories in mind, manipulates them skillfully, constructs three-dimensional variations, all while staying within the context and adhering to a rhythmic foundation. In this way, music builds "superstructures" in the neurons, which then, as a cognitive skill, carry over into other areas of life.
