Memory is essentially reconstructive.

We tend to imagine the brain to be a sort of a large library with innumerable shelves of books, or albums of pictures; when we remember a moment, it is simply retrieved/recalled from the library where it was quietly sitting.

But that's not how we humans operate. A camera is a passive instrument; it simply lets the light through, and records whatever it receives, while the eye is an active organ; it seeks what it wants to perceive. The eyes do not capture the moment like cameras do, and they are not sculptors that etch memories onto the brain.

What happens instead is that we perceive mainly what is significant to us and we discard the rest of the picture. A simple example is how you can listen to and understand someone's speech in the middle of a loud room. Yet, if you record that same situation with a microphone, you'll only hear a cacophony. This is because your ear listens actively; it perceives. While your microphone merely receives whatever input is there.

Afterwards, this perception is committed to memory, but not in its exact form. Your memory only keeps the gist of it. So when we remember something, we reconstruct the details from the gist. We do not recall them because they simply did not exist prior to the moment of remembrance. It's like a fridge that, instead of having cake in it, only has a recipe for making cake. Everytime you use that recipe, you'll make a slightly different cake.

In this sense, remembrance is an act of interpretation: When we remember some memory, we're essentially interpreting it in accordance with our current situation.

Just think about someone you once loved and now you don't... And think how your memory of them has changed (has been re-interpreted).

اللوحة تذكرني بأساطير الخلق القديمة Genesis بالشرق الأوسط... أغلبها جانت تكول أنّ الكون بدأ بشكل محيط بدائي من الفوضى ومنه طلعت الآلهة بشكل أو بآخر: البابليين سموه تيامات، المصريين القدماء سموه نو Nu، وبالكتاب المقدس سموه Tehom (بالعربية يترجموه لكلمة "الغمر" أو "المحيط" أو الماء).
