فرويد بالبداية جان يكول أنّ اللاوعي يحكمه ويسيطر عليه دافع واحد هو مبدأ اللذة (The pleasure principle)، اللي هو ببساطة رغبة الإنسان بالحصول على اللذة والمتعة الفورية، مثل المتعة الجنسية، والمتعة الإجتماعية اللي نحصلها من الطلعات والأصدقاء، ومتعة الأكل وغيرها...
مشكلة هذا المبدأ أنّه غير عملي بل وحتى خطير. لأن السعي نحو اللذة الفورية بكل وقت يخلينا ما ننتبه لمخاطر الحياة ولا للمستقبل. كل اللي نفكر بيه هو شلون نشبع كل رغباتنا الآنية بدون أنْ نخطط أو نفكر باللي رح يصير اليوم أو حتى الساعة الجاية. باختصار، مبدأ اللذة يخلي غرائزنا تسيطر علينا تمامًا، أكثر حتى من الحيوانات.

لهذا، يكلك أنّ الذات Ego طوّرت مبدأ ثاني، يسميه فرويد بمبدأ الواقعية (The reality principle). هالمبدأ همين يسعى نحو اللذة بالنهاية، لكن يكدر يأخرها للمستقبل أو يبدل المتعة الآنية بأُخرى مستقبلية. شغلته ببساطة أنْ يوفّق بين سعينا نحو اللذة وبين الواقع وعقباته ومخاطره. هذا المبدأ هو اللي يسمحلك مثلًا بأنْ تتجاوز رغبتك بالأكل لما تكون مسوي ريجيم، علمود تحصل لذة ثانية مستقبلية هي أنّ جسمك يصير أرتب أو صحتك تتحسن ومن هالسوالف.

From the point of view of the self-preservation of the organism among the difficulties of the external world, [the pleasure principle] is from the very outset inefficient and even highly dangerous. Under the influence of the ego's instincts of self-preservation, the pleasure principle is replaced by the reality principle. This latter principle does not abandon the intention of ultimately obtaining pleasure, but it nevertheless demands and carries into effect the postponement of satisfaction, the abandonment of a number of possibilities of gaining satisfaction and the temporary toleration of unpleasure as a step on the long indirect road to pleasure. The pleasure principle long persists, however, as the method of working employed by the sexual instincts, which are so hard to 'educate', and, starting from those instincts, or in the ego itself, it often succeeds in overcoming the reality principle, to the detriment of the organism as a whole.
