Animals have a membrane in their eyes called tapetum lucidum. It reflects light at night allowing them better night vision, and also making their eyes shine in the dark.

Humans don't have the tapetum lucidum, but their eyes also reflect some amount of light, mostly red (and infrared), although it needs special equipment to be seen, like an ophthalmoscope or a camera when you use a flash (red-eye effect).

When, instead of the red reflex, the pupil appears white (a condition called leukocoria), this could indicate an eye problem like in a type of cancer named retinoblastoma.

Blue-eyed cats & dogs usually have red-eye effect instead of eyeshine. Pets with heterochromia (different eye colors) like this cat will have both red-eye effect & eyeshine

إنّ لدينا منتسبين كبارًا يعيشون بيننا في الشرق كمواطنين بالإنتساب في العالم الغربي، يتلبّسون بالنموذج الأوروبي الأميركي، ويتشدّقون في مجالسهم بالإنكليزية، ويوقّعون بها أعمالَهم ورسائلهم، إنّ أُسلوبهم يثير الشفقة، وإنكليزيتهم، بحكم الإنتساب ذاتِه، ركيكةٌ عَجماء، يظنّ هؤلاء أنّهم متحضرون مجدِّدون، وهم غارقون إلى الأذقان في تقليدٍ آخر، لقد نسوا لغتهم التي لن يبدعوا إلا بها، واستعاروا لغةَ غيرِهم التي لن يعرفوها إلا بالنقل والوساطة، ولو عرفوا من اللفظ معناه المباشر فإنّهم في عَمَهٍ عن شحناته وظلاله، وإيحاءاته وتداعياته، وتجلّياته الثانية وأقانيمه الأُخرى، ومنشأه في التاريخ ومسيره في الزمن، وهُم بذلك يخسرون البُعد الثالث للغة، ويتبنّون لغةً مسطحة  مصمتة لن يفكروا بها إلا تفكيرًا مسطّحًا مصمتًا.

إنّ حياة الإنتساب هذه تضحيةٌ بالحياة وتنازلٌ عن الإرث ونفيٌ للذات، ووقرٌ وفقرٌ وخِزي. لقد باعَ أصحابُنا أنفسهم مجانًا وصاروا مسوخًا لا تروقُ لهم أعين الشرق أو الغرب، واختاروا أنْ يكونوا أذيالًا لا عمل لها إلا التبعية.

The irony about all those Westernized young people living in traditional Eastern societies, is that they choose to dissociate themselves from their original culture under the assumption that it's an inferior, rotten culture. At the same time, they believe that learning a European language, listening to pop songs and watching some TV shows would make the West embrace them as if they were its own cultural children and would deem them as "authentic and real" Western citizens.

All those young boys and girls are finding themselves in a cultural alienation where neither their original nor their admired Western culture would accept them. They belong neither to the East nor the West. The only people they truly belong to are those alienated like them; those fellow Eastern-dwelling Western-cultured citizens.
