Foucault called it the "medical gaze." It is the way the doctor looks at a patient and only focuses on the relevant "biomedical" information, discarding anything else that is personal or human about the patient. The medical gaze is what turns the patient into a case.

The medical gaze serves a very important role to find a diagnosis and cure the patient. But it serves very little in the communication with that very patient (especially the chronically-ill, those who must live the rest of their life without a cure). In such patients especially, a more humane and social approach is much more important.

See, that's why I love medicine: because it stands at this delicate (sometimes even awkward) intersection between science, philosophy, and down-to-earth social work.

الحمل، من الناحية التطورية، هو عملية تنافس بين الأب اللي يحاول ينقل جيناته للجيل الجاي، وبين الأُم اللي تحاول تحافظ على صحتها و "تحمي نفسها" من الجنين اللي عايش بداخلها 9 أشهر بلا إيجار. لهذا الأب عنده مصلحة بأنّ الجنين يكون سليم وفرص نجاته تكون أعلى، بينما الأُم صحيح همين عدها مصلحة بأنّ الجنين يكون سليم، بس بنفس الوقت ما تريد أنّه يأذيها هي ويستهلكها جسديًا.

لهذا أكو نوع من الجينات يسموهن imprinted genes. هاي الجينات ترث منها نسختين من آباءك ثنينهم (نسخة من أبوك ونسخة من أُمك)، بس تشتغل منهن نسخة وحدة. بعض هاي الجينات، ما تشتغل منهن إلا النسخة اللي ورثتها من أبوك وبهالحالة يسموها paternally expressed gene. أكو جينات ثانية ما تشتغل منها إلا النسخة اللي ورثتها من أُمك وبهالحالة يسموها maternally expressed.

الفكرة هي، بما أنّ الأب يريد ينقل جيناته بأي طريقة، وإنْ كان هالشي على حساب صحة الأُم، فهو رح يورّث أبناءه imprinted genes تخليهم ينمون بسرعة ويتطلبون مواد غذائية هواي وهالشي يتم عن طريق إستغلال الأُم بيولوجيًا. يُعتَقَد أنّ هيج جينات هي المسؤولة عن أشياء مثل سكري الحمل gestational DM (اللي يزيد نسبة السكر الواصل للجنين، مقابل إصابة الأُم بالسكري) ومثل الـ trophoblastic diseases اللي هو عبارة عن خلايا جنينية تتصرف مثل الورم تقريبًا وتنتشر بسرعة وتستهلك موارد الأُم.

بالمقابل، الأُم ممكن تورّث أبناءها imprinted genes تقلل قدرتهم على النمو والوصول للمواد الغذائية حتى ما يستهلكوها ويهددون صحتها وحياتها. يُعتَقَد أنّ هالجينات اللي يرثهن الجنين من الأُم إلهن دور بالإصابة بالـ pre-eclampsia وممكن يقللن وزن الطفل عند الولادة.

It is true that today, more than ever, you are free to do whatever you want.
But it is also true that today, what you want is largely dictated to you by the big Other. Our dreams, desires, and thoughts are becoming increasingly shaped by the Other, be it the government, some mega-corporation on another continent, or some edgy teen on TikTok.
