صعوبة ترجمة الشعر

والشعر لا يُستطاع أن يُترجَم، ولا يجوز عليهِ النقل، ومتى حوِّل تقطَّع نظمِه وبطلَ وزنُه، وذهب حسنُه وسقطَ موضعُ التعجب، لا كالكلامِ المنثور. والكلامُ المنثور المبتدأُ على ذلك أحسنُ وأوقعُ من المنثور الذي تحوّل من موزون الشعر.

This reminded me of something:

Thoughts expressed in verse are different from those expressed in prose.
Thoughts expressed in writing are different from those expressed in speaking.
Thoughts expressed in one language are different from those expressed in another.

There's always the false assumption that thoughts are some concrete concepts that hide in our minds, and when we speak, we merely translate them from concepts into spoken language. But that's wrong, the manner in which we express a thought is an essential part of thinking that very thought. In other words: expression is a form of thinking.
