يكلك سكان مدينة Devon بإنكلترا جانوا يعانون من آلام بالبطن وأعراض ثانية بدون ما يعرفون سببها. هالحالة استمرت عبر القرن الـ 17 لحد الـ 18 وصارت معروفة بين الناس لدرجة أنهم سموها "مغص مدينة ديفون،" لحدما طبيب إسمه جورج بيكر اكتشف أنّ أعراض المرض تتشابه وية تسمم الرصاص lead poisoning وتتبع السبب لحدما توصّل إلى أنّ الـ Cider—اللي هو مشروب كحولي من التفاح—جانوا يصنعوه بأدوات تحتوي أجزاء مصنوعة من الرصاص ويحفظوه ببراميل تحتوي رصاص وينظفون الأدوات بأدوات ثانية هم تحتوي رصاص... كل هذا سبّب تسمم مزمن بالرصاص للناس اللي يستهلكون الـ Cider وأدى للمغص (ونادرًا للوفاة).

أكو حالة مشابهة صارت بـ Poitou بفرنسا، وأعتقد بأجزاء ثانية من أوروبا. عادةً أما لأن مشروبات كحولية متعرضة للرصاص، أو لأن مياه الشرب جانت تمر عبر أنابيب رصاصية.

In his Inventum novum (1761) [New Discovery], Leopold Auenbrugger of Vienna announced the technique of percussion of the chest. An innkeeper's son, he had been familiar since childhood with the trick of thumping barrels to test their fullness. Moving from kegs to rib-cages, he noted that when struck with the finger, a healthy chest sounded like a cloth-covered drum; by contrast, a muffled sound or one of high pitch indicated pulmonary disease.

Patients present themselves to a psychiatrist with complaints that may be anywhere in the range between the most apparently localized difficulty (‘I have a reluctance for jumping from a plane’), to the most diffuse difficulty possible (‘I can’t say why I’ve come really. I suppose it is just me that’s not right’). However, no matter how circumscribed or diffuse the initial complaint may be, one knows that the patient is bringing into the treatment situation, whether intentionally or unintentionally, his existence, his whole being-in-his-world. One knows also that every aspect of his being is related in some way to every other aspect, although the manner in which these aspects are articulated may be by no means clear. It is the task of existential phenomenology to articulate what the other’s ‘world’ is and his way of being in it.
