The main figure was Hunayn ibn Ishaq حُنَين بن إسحاق (d. 873), later known in the West as Johannitius, a Nestorian Christian from the southern Iraqi town of al-Hira الحيرة. Hunayn, who travelled to the Byzantine empire in search of Galenic treatises and was said to wander the streets of Baghdad reciting Homer in Greek, was amazingly prolific. With his pupils, he translated 129 works of Galen into Arabic (and others into Syriac), providing the Arabic world with more Galenic texts than survive today in Greek.

يُعَدّ حُنَين بن إسحاق (توفّي 873م) الشخصيةَ الأهم في مجال الترجمة والذي عُرِف لاحقًا في الغرب باسم Johannitius. كانَ حُنَين مسيحيًا نسطوريًا من الحيرة في جنوب العراق سافَرَ إلى الإمبراطورية البيزنطية بحثًا عن مؤلفات جالينوس¹ ويُروى أنّه كان يتمشى في شوارع بغداد وهو يردِّدُ أشعار هوميروس بلغتها الأصلية (اليونانية). ثُمَّ أنّه كانَ غزيرَ الإنتاجِ بشكل مدهش، إذ تَرجَمَ هو وطلّابُه 129 مؤلَّفًا لجالينوس إلى العربية (ومؤلفات أُخرى إلى السريانية)، مما جعلَ أعمالَ جالينوس المتوفرة لنا بالعربية اليوم أكثرَ من تلك التي باليونانية أصلًا.
