It's not consciousness that's making us sick, it's imagination.

It's our ability to imagine—in our heads—a better, more utopian world than ours, and then compare our reality to the utopia of our mind. This is what underlies despair. As George Carlin said: "Inside every cynical person, there is a disappointed idealist."

I should say, I never liked this quote. It doesn't feel right, it feels too romantic and tortured artist-ish to me: it makes the entirety of humanity like a tortured romantic artist who's "too perfect and pure for our crooked world."
