What most people who benefit from the achievements of civilization don't realise is that the safety and security of civilization are fragile and weak structures (just like our own existence on the crust of this planet) superimposed on the inherent chaos and barbarism of the world and humans. And that these structures are very susceptible to be totally destroyed by anything from a natural disaster (like earthquakes, or solar storms) to epidemics to wars to terrorist attacks and revolutions.
