Pontifex (pontiff) Maximus was the title of the high priest in ancient Rome. It was later adopted as the title of the Pope in the catholic church.

It comes from Latin: pons (bridge) + facere (to make), which literally means "Bridge builder" because a priest is the bridge between humans and gods.
