Milan Kundera always makes me feel like we're chatting over whatever crosses his mind on a lazy afternoon in a Parisian café.

ثمّة وشيجةٌ سريّة بين البُطء والذاكرة، كما بينَ السرعةِ والنسيان. لنذكر، بهذا الصدد، وضعيةً قد تبدو عاديةً للغاية: رجلٌ يسيرُ في الشارع، ثم فجأةً يريدُ تذكُّرَ أمرٍ ما، لكنّ الذاكرة لا تُسعِفُه. في تلك اللحظة، بطريقةٍ آلية يتمهّلُ في الخطو. أمّا من يسعى إلى نسيانِ أمرٍ طارئٍ شاقٍ وقعَ له توًا، على العكس يُسرِع لا شعوريًا في مشيته، كما لو أنّه يرومُ الإبتعادَ عن طارئٍ ما زال، من حيث الزمن، قريبًا جدًا منه.
في الرياضيات الوجودية، تأخذُ هذه التجربةُ شكلَ معادلتين أوّليتين؛ تقومُ الأولى على تناسُبِ درجةِ البُطء مع حدّة الذاكرة، والثانية على تناسُبِ درجةِ السرعة مع حدّة النسيان.

This made me remember some neuroscience experiments where they conditioned some monkeys to expect delicious food after they see the light turning on. Afterwards, they measured dopamine levels in monkey brains.
It turned out that dopamine reaches its peak level NOT when the monkey receives the delicious food, but in the moments right before that (when the light turns on).

أتساءلُ لمَ لا يَنشرُ هذه الأفكارَ الهامة. فليسَ لهذا المؤرّخ الحاصل على دكتوراه في الآداب ما يَمنَعُه، إذ يقضي يومَه ضجِرًا بمكتبِه داخل المكتبة الوطنية. ألا يَكتَرِثُ بنشر نظرياتِه؟ أقلّ ما يُقال في الجواب إنّ التفكيرَ في نشرِها يثيرُ فيه الرعب. مَن يَنشُر أفكارَه بينَ الناس مهدَّدٌ تبعًا لذلك بحَملِ الآخرين على الإيمانِ به وبالتأثير فيهم، من ثمَّ يجِد نفسه متقمِّصًا دورَ أولئك الذين يتطلّعون إلى تغيير العالَم. تغييرُ العالَم! يا له من قصدٍ مُرعِب. لا لأنّ العالَم في صورتِه الراهنة يُثير الرضا، بل لأنّ كل تغييرٍ يقودُ حتمًا نحو الأسوأ... فهو يبتكِرُ أفكارَه ويبلوِرُها من أجل المتعة وحسب.
