أعظم حماقات المجتمع تبدو منطقيةً بالنسبة لأبناءه

Students these days are, in general, nice. I choose the word carefully. They are not particularly moral or noble. Such niceness is a facet of democratic character when times are good. Neither war nor tyranny nor want has hardened them or made demands on them. The wounds and rivalries caused by class distinction have disappeared along with any strong sense of class. Students are free of most constraints, and their families make sacrifices for them without asking for much in the way of obedience or respect. Religion and national origin have almost no noticeable effect on their social life or their career prospects.

إنّ الطلاب هذه الأيام يُعتَبَرون، بشكل عام، وديعين. وأنا أختارُ هذه الكلمة بعناية. هم لا يتميزون بحسٍّ عالٍ بالفضيلة أو النُبل. مثلُ هذه الوداعة تعدُّ سمةً للفرد الديمقراطي في أوقات الرخاء، إذ لم تقوِّهم أو تُطالِبهم الحرب ولا الطغيان ولا الحاجة بالتضحيات. الجروح والعداوات التي تسبّبها الإختلافات الطبقية قد اختفت ومعها اختفى أيُّ شعورٍ قوي بالطبقية. الطلابُ أحرارٌ من أغلبِ القيود، وعائلاتُهم تضحي من أجلِهم دون أنْ يُطالَبوا بالكثير من ناحية الإحترام أو الطاعة. الدين والجذور الوطنية لا تملك تأثيرًا ملحوظًا في حياتهم الإجتماعية أو نظرتهم للمستقبل.

Students these days are pleasant, friendly and, if not great-souled, at least not particularly mean-spirited. Their primary preoccupation is themselves, understood in the narrowest sense.

الطلابُ هذه الأيام لطيفون، ودودون، وإنْ لم يتميزوا بروحٍ عالية، فعلى الأقل هم ليسوا وضيعين. شغلُهم الشاغل هو أنفسُهم، بالمعنى الضيق للكلمة.

بهذا الكتاب شرح الأسباب اللي تجعل التعليم العالي والجيل الشاب الأميركي آنذاك طايح حظهم. رغم أنّ الكتاب قديم نسبيًا، بس من البارحة لليوم عايف مادة الفاينل وداقرة بالكتاب لأن هواي من الآراء اللي ذكرها جانت حلوة.
جزء مو قليل من الكتاب (على الأقل اللي قريته لحد هسة) ينطبق على الجيل الشاب العراقي اليوم. مو كل الجيل، أعتقد فقط الجزء اللي تشوفه بكليات الطب والهندسة وغيرها من الجامعات اللي يفترض أنها "الطبقة العليا" من المجتمع والمؤسسة التعليمية العراقية.

Why do enlightened people (Jesus & Buddha for example) are almost always thought to have endless compassion for the rest of humanity?

Buddha is said to have refused to enter Nirvana cuz he wanted to go back to the world and teach other humans about how to alleviate suffering.

Maybe there are among us more enlightened people than we think, but they just don't have enough compassion to care about teaching other humans.
