لأنّ كوننا أحرارًا يجعلُنا مسؤولين عن أفعالنا وأنفسنا والعالم، وكل هذه المسؤولية تجعلنا قلقين ومتوتّرين من ثُقل قراراتنا ونتائجها.
لهذا فإنّ الأطفال هم أقل البشر قلقًا، لأنهم أقلّهم حرية ومسؤولية. ولهذا نشعر نحن البشر بالحنين إلى هذا الزمن من أعمارنا، لأنّنا كنا بلا مسؤوليات، وبلا قلق.
بعضُنا يحاول التخفيف من هذا الشعور بالمسؤولية والحنين عبر اللجوء للدين؛ عبر الخضوع للخطة الإلهية بكل غموضها والإيمان بأنّ النتيجة الحتمية لكل شيء هي الخير. وبعضنا يفعل ذلك باللجوء للحب والإيمان أنّ المحبوب سوف يحبنا كما نحن بكل أخطائنا وفشلنا، فالكثير من علاقات الحب (والقصص الرومانسية) هي علاقات طفيلية يخسر الفرد فيها استقلاله ويصبح وجوده جزءًا من كيان أكبر هو "الثنائي" وتصبح حياته جزءًا من حياة "الثنائي" ليمكنه في المقابل أنْ يتخلص من بعض مسؤولياته الوجودية وحريته.
الكل يبحث عمّن هو أقوى منه ليحمّله مسؤوليته وثقل حريته... لا عَجَبَ أنّ إله المسيحية يسمّى بالأب؛ فالكل يبحث عن أب.
