كال نيوبورت بكتابه Digital minimalism يفرّق بين التواصل connection والمحادثة conversation من حيث أنّ المحادثة هي تفاعل بين شخصين بالعالم الحقيقي وتتطلب الانتباه لكمية جبيرة من المعلومات؛ لغة الجسد، نبرة الصوت، تعابير الوجه، حركة العيون، طريقة الكلام، وغيرها. بينما التواصل (مثل المراسلة texting) يتطلب الانتباه لمعلومات بسيطة نسبيًا، فقط قراءة شوية كلمات ويمكن شوية ايموجيز. وهالشي ممكن يفسّر ليش يزيد احساسنا بالوحدة كلما نستخدم السوشيل ميديا أكثر. لأن السوشيل ميديا تختلف عن المجتمع الحقيقي من حيث أنها ما تلبي رغبتنا بالعلاقات البشرية الغنية بالمعلومات واللي تخلينا نتواصل على مستوى عميق، أعمق بهواي من شوية أحرف ووجه حزين :")

Although generally considered by his contemporaries to be friendly and gentle, Leonardo was at times dark and troubled. His notebooks and drawings are a window into his fevered, imaginative, manic, and sometimes elated mind. Had he been a student at the outset of the twenty-first century, he may have been put on a pharmaceutical regimen to alleviate his mood swings and attention-deficit disorder. One need not subscribe to the artist-as-troubled-genius trope to believe we are fortunate that Leonardo was left to his own devices to slay his demons while conjuring up his dragons.

رغم أنّه اعتُبِر ودودًا ولطيفًا من قِبَل معاصِريه، إلّا أنّ ليوناردو دافنشي كان في بعض الأحيان سوداويًا ومهمومًا. مذكّراته تمثّل نافذةً لخياله الواسع وعقله المحموم والمهووس، وفي بعض الأحيان، السعيد.
لو كانَ ليوناردو طالبًا جامعيًا يعيش في مطلع القرن الحادي والعشرين، لربما وِصفَت له مجموعةُ أدويةٍ لتخفّفَ تقلباته المزاجية واضطراب الانتباه الذي لديه. لا يحتاج المرء ليؤمن بالصورة النمطية للفنّان المعذب ليُدرِك أنّنا محظوظون أنّ ليوناردو قد تُرِك لنفسه ليصارعَ شياطينه ويرسم تنانينه في ذات الوقت.
