بوقت نحت التمثال، ليوناردو جان تلميذ باستديو فيروكيو. يُقال أنّ النحات فيروكيو استخدم ليوناردو، اللي جان عمره 14 آنذاك، كنموذج للتمثال، ولهذا البعض يعتبرون وجه التمثال هو نفسه وجه ليوناردو المراهق.
