لا بد أننا جميعا نشك أحيانـًا بكوننا محبوبين. كلنا عراة تحت ثيابنا، ولدينا أسباب للاعتقاد أن أجسادنا العارية غير جذابة. فنحن نعرف عيوبها، ضعفها المستتر أو بقعها المنفرة. لكننا أيضًا عراة تحت الأقنعة التي نرتديها أمام الآخرين وأمام أنفسنا. ونعرف في لا وعينا ليس أننا نبلاء وحسب بل أيضًا أننا وضيعون، ليس أننا لطفاء وحسب بل أيضًا أننا قساة، كما نعرف في لا وعينا كثيرًا من الحقائق غير السارّة عن أنفسنا. إن شعورنا بالإثم يحد من ثقتنا بالنفس، الأمر الذي يبرر شكوكنا بأننا غير محبوبين. وحين ننشد الحب، حين نريد أن نكون مطلوبين ومحط إعجاب واحتفاء، فإننا نفعل ذلك بشكل رئيسى لأن كوننا محبوبين يعني غفران أغلاطنا ونواقصنا، سوء أفعالنا وجرائمنا التي نقترفها في أفكارنا. أن تكون محبوبًا يعني أن تكون لك قيمة مميزة، وأن تحظى بالغفران. إن كونك مطلوبًا ومحبوبًا، يسكِّن الشعور بالإثم الفردي، ويؤكد مجددًا أننا لسنا متروكين وحدنا أو ملقى بنا جانبًا.
